A man with no principles – is this the best we can do?

This is one of two posts on TCW today about the election of Humza Yousaf to succeed Nicola Sturgeon as leader of the Scottish National Party.

BIG day for the plucky SNP, fifty thousand of whom voted to elect Humza Yousaf as their leader.

Yousaf squeezed past Kate Forbes in the race. She had a lot to overcome and didn’t quite make it. She is, after all, a young white woman, a wife and mother whose social views expressed during the hustings were described by Professor John Curtice as failing to understand the public sensibility on issues such as same-sex marriage. Mrs Forbes is a Christian who waited until being married to have a child; she goes to church on a Sunday – a woman demonstrably adrift from the norms of ‘our’ secular society. She even missed the vote on gender affirmation while on maternity leave.

What can we say about Yousaf? A man of no principles – yes, that would be about right. A Muslim, who missed the vote on gay marriage for fear of his community’s displeasure but now fervently supports the legal right of men to change their gender with/without encumbrance (pun intended). Yousaf is sworn to challenge the UK government’s ‘undemocratic’ decision to block such legislation yet claims he will be a voice for all the people. He will lead us all through green pastures to the sunny uplands of a new independent utopia.

Aye, right: most Scots, who are not SNP members or even SNP voters, have a terrible affliction. They remember Humza’s shady backstory, his lacklustre performance as Transport Minister, his extreme efforts as ‘Justice’ Minister to curb singing at football matches and his clamping down on free speech with enforcement of the most draconian hate laws since Stalinist Russia, and they don’t like him or trust him at all.

They judge his present performance as Health Minister harshly – well, we can all see the mess it’s in. Much worse outcomes than anywhere in Europe, a budget of £19billion and record waiting lists for diagnosis and treatment, waiting times of up to 60 hours in A&E, while he spends £165,000 per person on heroin for our addicts. You could not make it up.

Yousaf has said not a peep about the shady finances of the SNP or the questionable antics of his erstwhile patron and her husband. He has been very animated, though, about the deplorable number of White People in positions of authority, his disgust palpable. You can bet your life that he will get right on to fixing that.

He endorses the byzantine bottle-recycling proposals dreamt up by bonkers Greens which will destroy small businesses and intends to continue to work with the Greens to ‘take advantage’ of Scotland’s progress towards a carbon-neutral economy. He wants to return to the European Union.

In the meanwhile, Scots freeze; old people in ‘care’ homes die in record numbers; children are undernourished and under-looked-after; levels of childhood poverty are a national disgrace. The education system, once envied throughout the world, is reduced to spouting gender neutral nonsense and cant about Net Zero. The attainment gap is widening but every child knows what bondage, anal sex and rimming is, and they are confident they can change their sex without worrying about their parents’ consent.

How are the Scots so diminished that this is the best we have? I fear we are lost.
