THE 2010s will be remembered for Brexit. This is the beginning of the people’s fightback against the globalist elite who want to eradicate nation states and all sense of belonging that comes with nationhood.
At the very end of the decade, three and a half years after the referendum in which the people of the United Kingdom voted to leave the EU, the people voted for Boris Johnson because they believed his promise to ‘Get Brexit Done’. He will have to deliver.
However, there is another battle ahead which is just as important. While most people in Britain have been completely pre-occupied with Brexit, the western world in general has witnessed the rise of insane culture of wokeness.
Not a day goes past without some bizarre new pronouncement by the politically correct virtue-signalling brigade. Indeed, at the end of the decade, the social justice warriors of the mainstream media and their allies seem to be competing to outdo themselves in foisting ever more extreme nonsense on society.
This week the Daily Mirror produced a piece with the headline: ‘Transgender man gives birth to non-binary partner’s baby with female sperm donor’.
This is not an April Fool’s joke, and the population at large is expected to accept this as the new truth, when to all right-thinking people it is barking mad. Men do not give birth. Females cannot be sperm donors. Yet if you disagree, you may well get a call from the self-styled thought police or even the real police, as happened to Harry Miller, a docker from Humberside who wrote a limerick that questioned whether ‘transgender women’ were actually women. (They are not.)
Also this week, the managers of the Lake District National Park are beating themselves for not attracting a diverse enough range of visitors. According to the woke brigade, all those pesky mountains and lakes are simply not inclusive enough, so they need to be concreted over in the name of equality.
The same globalist elite which wanted to end the existence of the United Kingdom by subsuming us into the EU, has been busily deconstructing the foundations and structure of the nation from within by infiltrating our institutions. In doing so it has sought to undermine the family, the church, the common law and turn the education system on its head so that it no longer seeks to nurture excellence but rather to indoctrinate children and students with new dogmas which are alien to our Judaeo-Christian historical foundations.
Schools are filled with activist teachers who seek to programme the youngest of children with genderqueer theory, climate alarmism, toxic misandrous feminism, EUphilia and a disdain for the nation state in general and our own nation in particular. Activist judges are becoming ever more commonplace, interpreting laws in unintended ways which set precedents that entrench the dogmas of wokeness in common law.
There is increasing alarm about the direction our society is taking and how it is being corroded from within by Alinskyite activists who have wormed their way into almost all the positions of influence in our institutions and who now hold immense power to do continue damaging our country from within. They need to be stopped, and ultimately replaced.
There is one action, however, which will do more than anything else to halt the corrosion, and that is to repeal the Equality Act 2010. This was the last act of the stale and stagnant Blair-Brown Labour administration, but its consequences have been profound. It does not simply promote equality, it enforces the ‘progressive’ liberal-Left agenda of ‘equality, diversity and inclusion’ in every area of our national life.
The Act sets out nine protected characteristics, and enforces a requirement to ‘foster good relationships’ with people or groups with any of these characteristics. Thus employers are required to implement codes of conduct which apply sanctions if anyone feels that he or she has been offended. An army of ‘equality, diversity and inclusion officers’ have been employed to ensure compliance. In addition, police forces and the Crown Prosecution Service have expanded the definitions of ‘hate crime’ and ‘hate speech’ beyond the bounds of the law to include ‘perceived hostility’.
This has had a chilling effect on freedom of expression, as people are constantly walking on eggshells, afraid that they may be sanctioned for being ‘offensive’ even if they didn’t mean to be.
Even parents who want to protect their young children from inappropriate lessons on homosexuality and transgenderism have been smeared by LGBT activists, despite many of them being Christian, Jewish or Muslim, thus having the protected characteristic of religious belief themselves. In the brave new world of equality, some protected characteristics are more equal than others.
Now, however, is the time to push the Overton Window and push it hard. Progressives are reeling from the election result and the forces of conservatism have the upper hand. We must push to repeal the Equality Act 2010. It should be replaced with equality law which promotes general equality of opportunity for individuals, rather than attempting to assign everyone into competing groups based on arbitrary characteristics, condemned to compete eternally for the accolade of being the most oppressed. This would be a radical, positive and conservative departure from Harriet Harman’s destructive law.
We have nearly won the battle for Brexit. If we now embark upon a targeted dismantling of the progressive statutes and quangos from the Blair/Brown/Cameron/May years combined with a merciless satirisation of wokeness, we can win the culture war as well.
