Who will save the Democrats from their latest suicide mission? For decades they have dealt in character assassination against political opponents, but today they seem to be lining up against not just political opponents but vast numbers of voters (straight white men and white women in particular), all the important institutions of the United States and the US itself.
If you get your news from British media you will be under the impression that Trump is relentlessly negative and a pantomime villain. You may also believe that the Democrats are conducting a noble and worthy ‘resistance’. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Since the Democrats lost the 2016 election they have sought to ‘delegitimise’ the Presidency. Now that Justice Kavanaugh has cemented a conservative-majority Supreme Court, they want to delegitimise that institution also. Next up is the Electoral College – that must go, and also the Senate because smaller states such as North Dakota get two Senators, the same as the much more densely populated New York. It’s not fair, the Democrats whine, ignoring completely the fact that it is a federal system and this is what you would expect.
During Kavanaugh the Democrats set themselves up against due process and the presumption of innocence, and post-Kavanaugh they even want to delegitimise the Constitution itself, the one document that most Americans revere. It’s madness.
The Democrats want to impeach everyone: Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, Justice Kavanaugh. Impeach, impeach, impeach. It is lunacy. In fact, the only sane liberal Democrat, Alan Dershowitz, is cracking up over it all, imploring the Democrats to put the Kavanaugh saga behind them and move on.
Attacking politicians and institutions is one thing, but what is really electoral suicide is attacking the voter – yet the Democrats do this all the time. Hillary Clinton famously called many voters ‘a basket of deplorables’, and that worked out well. The former newspaper the New York Times carries racist screeds not only denouncing the white man, but now the white woman also.
But it is the relentless negativity of the Democrats that you will miss from the UK media. The Democrats were once the party of ‘the only thing we have to fear is fear itself’. (FDR 1933 during the crippling depression). Today the message is be fearful, be afraid, be very afraid because there are racists, and homophobes, and now rapists everywhere. Everywhere!
If the Democrats are not calling the voters deplorable then they are slicing and dicing them into different identity groups and calling them victims. Now maybe I am a fool, but can you think of a country where the message of victimhood is least likely to resonate? Don’t you think that would be the United States? I don’t think immigrants move to America to be victims. They move there to be winners.
And what does Donald Trump offer? Winning. Trump tells the American voter that they will be so proud of their country and that there will be so much winning that they will famously ‘get tired of winning’.
He knows, and the voter knows, you can’t get tired of winning. Now I ask you, dear reader, on messaging terms alone which is more attractive: you are a winner and we will win some more, or you are victims who are going be raped by all the deplorables?
Trump offers not only winning, he promises to Make America Great Again. On the other hand the Democrats, who once demanded of the voter to ‘ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country’ (JFK 1961), say America is rotten, is racist and it needs to be fundamentally transformed (Obama).
It is true that there is no shifting the blue states such as California and New York. They know they are diverse because they can hire a nanny from the Philippines and a Mexican gardener so there is no changing them. But I am not surprised that many of the states in between went for Trump in 2016. And with the economy booming, I doubt if the voter will get tired of all the winning any time soon.
The Democrats, meanwhile, offer the voters nothing but impeachment, Russiagate, the division and hatred of identity politics and victimhood. During Kavanaugh it looked as if they were going to bring back Prohibition as they denounced drinking and waved around a high school year book like a murder weapon. Sure, the Democrats are evil – but they are also looking pretty stupid right now. I’m just glad neither FDR nor JFK is around to see it.
