Anti-Semitic South Africa climbs the world bullying league

A perfect storm of economic hardship, a corrupt government and an alignment with Islamist regimes and terrorists is turning South Africa into a rogue state.

Its economy shrank by 2.2 per cent in the first quarter of this year. Worryingly, it has a 38 per cent youth unemployment rate. The ANC prefers to indulge in conspicuous consumption rather than help ease the impoverishment among many of its 56million citizens.

Agriculture has strengthened the economy but with Cyril Ramaphosa’s land appropriation plans – a distraction ploy – this won’t last. Spurred on by the government, white South African farmers are being attacked and murdered at an alarming rate.

Crime is out of control, with over two million serious incidents recorded in 2017. South Africa also has some of the highest rape statistics in the world.

Like many other failing regimes, South Africa is turning on its Jews. The ANC’s attempts to inflame anti-Semitism is a calculated distraction from the mess its successive governments have made of the country. Hatred of Jews and Israel is growing at an alarming rate.

The ANC has form when it comes to Israel. Supported and armed by the USSR, its apparatchiks aligned themselves ideologically with that other USSR terrorist creation, the PLO. Both organisations fundamentally reject the West and Israel. The ANC’s hatred for Israel, and the consequential anti-Semitism, is a historical habit which the ANC is not even trying to break. The most virulent form of anti-Semitism today is found within the Left and Islamism. No wonder it is so prevalent in South Africa.

The incompetent Cape Town government is responsible for creating a perilous situation for South African Jews. In May, the cabinet ludicrously told the Israeli government to withdraw from Gaza after the Jewish state defended itself against jihadi border invaders. Perhaps the ANC are so taken in by Islamist propaganda that they forgot the inconvenient fact that Israel did withdraw from Gaza – in 2005.

This precipitated a rush of anti-Semitic incidents. Last month the Johannesburg mayor, Herman Mashaba, suspended health official Dr Mpho Phalatse for saying that the city was a friend of Israel. The ANC, never ones to miss an opportunity to criticise Israel, publicly castigated her and reaffirmed their support for a ‘free Palestine’, which is code for the destruction of Israel. Phalatse was reinstated three weeks later after showing sufficient ‘remorse’ for what is now viewed in South Africa as unforgivable support for the Jewish state.

At O R Tambo airport near Johannesburg passengers, including children, newly arrived from Tel Aviv and quietly waiting for their baggage, were harassed by a man who screamed that ‘all Jews are wicked’. The lack of action by airport security staff to protect victims hints at their complicity in anti-Semitism.

A prominent model, Shashi Naidoo, was forced to apologise publicly for supporting Israel on Facebook. In a display reminiscent of China’s Cultural Revolution, the visibly shaken Naidoo begged for forgiveness at a press conference. She was flanked by the leader of the South African Boycott Disinvestment Sanctions (BDS) campaign, Mohammed Desai. In 2013 Desai arranged a protest against a performance by an Israeli musician and led chants of ‘shoot the Jew’.

In a sycophantic display of capitulation to the BDS campaign the media lauded Naidoo for her ‘courage’. A representative of the South African Council of Churches (SACC) admonished Naidoo and said the Council will help her ‘correct her mistake’. This shilling for Islamists is unsurprising given that the SACC is involved with the infamous World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical Accompaniment programme in Israel. This programme actively advocates the destruction of Israel and is counterproductive to Christians who live in Gaza and the West Bank. Open Doors puts the Palestinian Territories as number 36 on its worldwide watchlist of places which persecute Christians and blames Islamic oppression for this. Israel, a democratic society where all citizens are free to practise the religion of their choice, does not appear on the list. So why do the SACC and the WCC support those who persecute their Christian brothers and sisters? Logic has never been a strong point for anti-Semites.

There are also reports of anti-Semitic comments on social media which make the antics of British Labour Party members look tame. Threats to inflict another Holocaust on South African Jews are incitements to murder ignored by the government.

South Africans who refuse to fall for the lie that Israel is an apartheid state are now publicly humiliated and bullied until they are forced to deny the truth. No dissent from the false narrative is tolerated. These tactics are a sign of tyranny and are not only a worrying indication of the growth of anti-Semitism in South Africa, but also of the suppression of free speech.

The exacerbation of anti-Semitism shouldn’t be attributed only to historical patterns and clumsy diversions. South Africa is attempting to situate itself as a power player allied with world bullies Russia, Turkey, China and Iran. Displays of hatred against the Jewish state are a way for the government to cement its alignment with Iran and its proxies Hezbollah and Hamas.

Taking advantage of the increased lawlessness in South Africa, Isis and Al-Qaeda also actively operate there, to the point that the UK issued a terror warning about visiting the country. Jihadi training camps have been set up and the Jewish community is one of their targets. The ANC government is wilfully blind to the geo-politics of the Middle East being played out in South Africa.

In its bid to cosy up to Islamism the government is embracing racism. The virus of anti-Semitism contaminates the highest echelons of the ANC, infects the mandarins who run the municipalities and is transmitted to journalists, churchgoers, students, workers and the unemployed. The legacy of apartheid does not grant the ANC the right to inflame and inflict hatred towards its own citizens. It would be a bitter irony if the West has to impose sanctions to prevent the Rainbow Nation from turning into another murderous and dangerous pariah state, lost in its hatred for Jews.
