Anti-Semitism and the freedom movement, Part 4

-

In the fourth part of their series on an emergent anti-Semitism in the freedom movement that they fear will discredit it, Norman Fenton and Karen Harradine focus on the obsessive and ignorant anti-Zionism in Feargus O’Connor Greenwood’s book, 180 Degrees: Unlearn the Lies You’ve Been Taught to Believe, which was handed out free to delegates at a recent World Health Council conference. You can read Part 1 here, Part 2 here and Part 3 here.

THE accusation of some in the freedom movement that Zionists control the media is perhaps not surprising given the decades of Israel-bashing by the MSM, though risible in the circumstances. The BBC in particular has a nasty habit of reporting from the perspective of Hamas and, most recently, under the specious defence of ‘impartiality’. The BBC insists on referring to Hamas as ‘militants’, trivialising its jihadist goals, instead of correctly labelling them terrorists. BBC journalists working for their Arabic service have been found publicly expressing support for Hamas, one calling the recent slaughter of Israelis ‘a morning of hope’.

So endemic is its anti-Zionism that the BBC continues to refuse to release the Balen Report which uncovered the anti-Israel bias that has dominated its news coverage for many years.

Systemic and persistent anti-Israel bias in MSM thoroughly documented by Honest Reporting, Gatestone InstituteJewish Virtual LibraryStand With Us, and Elder of Ziyon reveals that it is not exclusive to the BBC.

Those in the freedom movement who are more aware than anybody of the extent to which the MSM has closed down debate on critical topics such as climate change, lied on Covid-19 vaccine safety and efficacy, and has insisted on a blinkered pro-Ukraine narrative, should understand that logic follows that it will lie or be selective about others too, such as Israel. Yet such is the cognitive dissonance of some in the freedom movement that they are prepared to accept as fact the MSM’s institutional bias when it comes to Israel.

Anti-Zionists in the freedom movement need to start interrogating these so-called facts as they have done with Covid and lockdown. They might ponder on why there is anti-Israel bias and anti-Semitism in the MSM, the United Nations and many of its subsidiaries if Jews/Zionists control the media and the globalist agenda, as books like Greenwood’s encourage them to think.

Exactly as Rose Koire warned, the freedom movement is in danger of being discredited or ignored because of anti-Semitism if it carries on this way. What discredited the Labour Party under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn was not false allegations of anti-Semitism, as many in the Freedom movement claim, but rather genuine examples of Jew hatred, and support for terrorists like Hezbollah and Hamas.

Another problem is that when quite justifiable accusations of anti-Semitism are made against the freedom movement, too often they are met with cries of a ‘smear’, reminiscent of the Corbynistas’ woeful responses against similar allegations. Any criticism of their irrational hatred of Israel they attributed to ‘Zionist’ control of the media – a trope stemming straight from publication of the false tracts of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the most notorious and widely distributed anti-Semitic publication of modern times, a fiction written to blame Jews for a variety of ills.

Much of this is evident in Greenwood’s book. While promoting poorly sourced theories that ‘Zionists’ are at the root of some of the most evil events of the last 60 years, he asserts that any person who dares to talk about these ‘truths’ is automatically and wrongly labelled an anti-Semite by the Zionist cabal who control so much, creating false victim mentality. Greenwood would no doubt accuse us of being part of that cabal for raising the concerns in this series.

A common tactic in promoting the false narrative on Israel and Zionists – and one that is employed consistently by Greenwood – is to use ‘Jewish’ or Israeli sources such as the anti-Zionist Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz and Jewish anti-Zionist journalist Max Blumenthal, themselvesfanatical anti-Zionists. While Hamas was still slaughtering Israel civilians last week, Blumenthal put out a tweet which appeared to be revelling in the massacre, claiming that Gaza was made up of refugees from Israel in 1948 and saying ‘Their great-grandsons have come back with a vengeance.’

He is also currently promoting the inference that Israeli soldiers ‘undoubtedly’ shot Israeli civilians deliberately, when what the survivor who was the source of it actually said was ‘Yes’ to the question if any civilians were caught in the crossfire.

The reliance on anti-Zionist Jews like Blumenthal or Norman Finkelstein as ‘legitimate’ authorities is misguided at best and at worst is used to buffer accusations of blatant anti-Semitism. Our contemporary history is littered with Jewish anti-Zionists causing untold damage to their co-religionists for whatever their personal psycho-social reasons. Some either push outright blood libels or embellish stories containing a grain of truth. Finkelstein has grown in popularity amongst the freedom movement despite the fact that he has been discredited multiple times by scholars and political commentators. A purveyor of soft Holocaust denial and anti-Semitic tropes that Jews are greedy and steal, and a fervent champion for the destruction of Israel, the harm he has caused to Jews is incalculable

Others who Greenwood uses as sources for his Zionist conspiracy theories include:

·         Ari Ben-Menashe, a disgruntled former Mossad agent and convicted arms dealer who has a record of making up fantasy stories to discredit Israel, for example accusing Israel of being responsible for the 1985 murder of an elderly Jewish man on the cruise ship Achille Lauro. The reality is that the PLO, in one of its many terrorist attacks on Jews, was solely responsible for the murder of Leon Klinghoffer as he sat helplessly in his wheelchair.

·         Tony Greenstein, a Jew and convicted thug whose rabid anti-Semitism was even too much for Corbyn’s Labour, was expelled from the party in 2018 after defending Holocaust deniers and spreading blood libels about veteran Labour MP Louise Ellman.

·         Labour MP Gerald Kaufman (1930-2017), another Jewish anti-Zionist who circulated anti-Semitic tropes such as comparing Israelis to Nazis and that Jews used their money to influence parliament.

Let’s not forget that Jewish Labour Party members needed bodyguards for their own protection at their own conference in 2018.  This year’s Labour Party conference has proved no different, with members at a fringe meeting applauding Hamas for its pogrom in Israel.

Predictably, like all anti-Zionists, Greenwood can’t resist focusing on the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty during the 1967 Six Day War to frame it not just as a deliberate act against the US but as a prime example of Israel’s supposed control over the US and its inherent evil and supremacist plans. The author ignores all the evidence in the most comprehensive report on the incident which clearly shows this was an accident in the fog of war.

He also suggests that the 7/7 London suicide bombings in 2005 was a false flag operation, citing a reference which puts the blame on Israel. There is no evidence to back up what is essentially another blood libel, which shockingly masks the actions of the real perpetrators of this crime, Islamist terrorists.

True to form, Greenwood is obsessed with the role of Israel/Mossad/Zionists in the 9/11 attacks in 2001, quoting Alan Sabrosky, a columnist for the anti-Semitic website Veterans Today, saying: ‘It is 100 per cent certain that 9/11 was a Mossad operation’. (page 85)

Using such quotes to back up this 9/11 trope is not the ‘proof’ that anti-Zionists like to think it is. While there is little doubt that the official US Government 9/11 narrative is flawed, the hypothesis that Israel/Mossad/Zionists were wholly behind the attacks is a lie which refuses to die, despite the plethora of evidence to the contrary. Not only is it a blood libel, wrongly attributing murder to Jews, but it gives the real culprits, whether it be Al Qaeda, the Saudi Government or a combination of those working with CIA agents, a free pass for their terror.

In Part Five we show how this obsession with Israel threatens global peace and security.
