Are we being fleeced by Big Pharma’s high blood pressure drug-pushers?

A COUPLE of years ago I was diagnosed as having excessively high blood pressure and put on medication to lower it. Through a combination of increased exercise and less alcohol, I managed to bring my blood pressure (systolic) down to around 135-140 and the diastolic down to 85-90.

I then consulted Doctor Google to find out if I needed to continue taking my blood pressure medication and found at least two conflicting philosophies. Apparently until recently most medical texts suggested that the ideal blood pressure range depended on one’s age:

According to this approach, I should have nothing to worry about. So I can stop taking my twice-daily medication and Big Pharma will lose a customer.

However, according to the most recent recommendation from the American Heart Association, there is just one ideal blood pressure level (120/80) whatever your age:

If I take this chart as gospel, I should continue with my medication for the rest of my life and Big Pharma keeps this loyal customer.

It is estimated that just over a quarter of adults in the UK, around 14.4million people, have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. Of these, around nine million people have been diagnosed with high blood pressure by their GP. According to a 2023 report from the American Heart Association, nearly half of Americans aged 20 and older, or more than 122million people, have high blood pressure. This is up from 28.9 per cent in 1988-94, the increase being attributed to an ageing population and the obesity epidemic.

So, high blood pressure is a growing and extremely lucrative market for Big Pharma. I imagine that the champagne corks were popping in these companies when the American Heart Association produced its new guidance. If health authorities lowered the ideal level for what is considered to be ‘normal’ blood pressure, that would mean an awful lot more profitable, captive customers for the blood-pressure pill-pushers.

I realise that on YouTube you can find doctors recommending almost anything for any condition – videos on medical matters often attract millions of (lucrative for the doctors) views. So these videos have to be taken with more than a pinch of salt. However, in the opinion of one doctor I watched on YouTube, if someone like myself managed to get my blood pressure level down to systolic 135-140, the extra medication which would be required to bring it down to the American Heart Association’s recommended level of 120 systolic could do more damage to various bits of my body – especially kidneys and heart – than living with my current 135-140 level.

Following the covid event, people are beginning to realise how our health services were plundered by the Big Pharma snake-oil salespeople flogging dubiously effective and questionably safe supposed ‘vaccines’, how tens of millions were pressured into getting vaccinations they didn’t need and how Big Pharma managed to control our political elites.

Looking at the way Big Pharma cashed in from the ‘pandemic’ panic, a cynic might speculate that the new lower recommended blood pressure levels from the American Heart Association have an awful lot to do with successful lobbying by Big Pharma and generous piles of money passing from Big Pharma to the health authorities. Maybe the changes are more about ensuring Big Pharma’s financial health than human health?
