Boris Johnson, the British Marshal Petain

CONSERVATIVE political thinkers used to base their ideas on the fallibility of humanity: democracy means that we can get rid of bad governments; it is a safeguard. But this realist view of the human condition, taking account of our capacity for harmful behaviour, went from the soul of the conservative party some time ago. Heath managed to deceive Parliament and the people by signing away democratic sovereignty when we joined the EC, thus facilitating an ever wider river of legislation from Brussels which Parliament could not gainsay, cleverly disguised as if it were the will of Parliament alone. A Walter Mitty idealist world of globalist goodwill to and from all nations and ideologies was embraced by our absurdly named ‘Conservative Party’. This less than 40 years after 1939 when the trusting idealism of Chamberlain and UK disarmament was revealed as a grotesque failure of statecraft.

Our Walter Mitty outlook has led to all manner of absurd and irrational governmental policies, for example the total trust placed in the Chinese Communist Party, the rulers of China in all dimensions of state and culture. The Chinese Communist Party has been allowed into a wide range of national institutions, even the construction of our 5G telecoms system – until Trump banged the table and stopped it. Across academia, universities and colleges invited Chinese students and companies in, glad of their cash, and opening up sensitive, even militarily sensitive, information. The UK behaved as if dealing with a normal liberal democratic nation, turning a blind eye to the reality of what China is in fact. China has grown immensely strong economically and militarily as its trade with the West has added to its muscle and intelligence.

And here we are with Putin walking into the Ukrainian regions he wants, as in 1936 when Hitler simply walked his forces into the Rhineland territories which had been demilitarised under the Treaty of Versailles. The soft liberal West has simply failed to engage with the hard and sad fact of aggression.

As TCW has been saying for some time, the Northern Ireland Protocol is just as much an aggressive seizure of a province, but ‘without fighting’. Northern Ireland, with consent neither sought nor obtained from the Unionist community, is being integrated into the EU single market, with the UK spending millions on enforcing a sea border sundering NI from the mainland UK. The government is clearly not going to stop this act of international theft by using the entirely proper and fully agreed Article 16 in the NIP: it has threatened to use it over and over again, just as it threatened to leave the EU on WTO terms. So the government is, it seems, simply playing a long game of gradually ceding NI to Brussels control, prior to Brussels ceding it to the Republic of Ireland. This is in flagrant violation of the international treaty, the Good Friday Agreement, to which the US is a signatory, and thus a solemn commitment is being broken. President Biden, a Sinn Fein sympathiser, refuses to recognise that the NIP oppresses the Unionists, even their right to a political identity.

If PM Johnson continues along this utterly treacherous path of lying to the Unionists and betraying them, losing the province from the UK by placing it under Brussels jurisdiction and acting as their Vichy-style apparatchiks, he will cement his great and abiding legacy, seen in all aspects of policy, that of sheer cowardice. The NIP means that Brussels has a control mechanism over all the UK if and when it chooses to diverge from Brussels regulation, for example the UK cannot abolish VAT on energy bills unless Article 16 is triggered

For some reason the MSM is colluding with government in covering up this devious and malevolent system. As Putin is taking Russian speaking provinces of Ukraine, Brussels is taking Northern Ireland AND retaining control of regulation in the UK. Brexit has not been done, and PM Johnson knows it. To return to the history of the 1930s, he is the Marshal Petain of the UK.
