SOCIALISM is trendy among prosperous Westerners. Ignoring the fact that capitalism has brought them their wealth, they instead indulge in dreams of a socialist ‘paradise’ to assuage their guilt of being white and rich.
They believe that by actively supporting socialist policies, they show themselves to be compassionate. Wallowing in a mistaken sense of virtue, they wilfully ignore the harsh lessons that socialism is drenched in blood.
The ruins of Venezuela may be too far away for them to relate to, but California is not. It’s the wealthiest state in the US, with a net worth of more than four and a half trillion dollars, larger than many countries. Yet Californian citizens and bureaucrats are doing their best to turn it into a socialist state.
Their Justin Trudeau-style Democratic Governor, Gavin Newson, is in thrall to both socialism and to the climate change cult. On his watch, California is being transformed from a successfully functioning society into a nightmarish dystopian failure.
Thanks to its politicians’ capitulation to the climate change agenda, the harder it is becoming for Californians to keep their lights on. The once ‘Golden State’ has the highest electricity prices in the US because of the use of prohibitively expensive renewables.
In its green wisdom, California also forbids the trimming of trees, even those which touch power lines. No wonder uncontrollable wildfires raged through the state last month. And then almost two million Californians went without power during blackouts deemed necessary by Newson in his desperation to combat the fires.
Responding to those who criticised his disastrous mismanagement, Newson, like the good socialist he is, blamed capitalism on the high electricity rates and blackouts – which was rather odd considering the degree to which the state’s energy providers are regulated.
Extreme energy policies may cause great harm. But as long as Newson can virtue-signal the sanctity of human and animal life, that harm matters for nothing. When forests are not properly maintained, they become massive bundles of kindle. And as they burn, they kill.
Even San Francisco Bay – the wealthiest part of the state – hasn’t escaped the onward march of California’s big government, America’s standard bearer for socialism. Residents there have a net average worth of £350,000 each. Yet it’s still crime-ridden, drug-infested and dirty. It is no coincidence that the mayoral office has been Democratic since 1956, for whom implementing obscure rules and punishing growth are their priorities.
Instead of fixing the havoc that they have created, bureaucrats are instead, in true Orwellian style, indoctrinating the next generation of Californians into more socialist and identity politics theory. As if in an attempt to establish the most woke state ever, the Education Department created the ‘Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum’.
The consultation process for this revealed a module riddled with identity politics, racism and a socialist agenda. It provides a recipe for children to become neurotic self-haters, policing themselves and others lest they capitulate to common sense and rationality.
Its official resource guide teaches children that capitalism is a form of ‘oppression’ and is ‘racist’. The American millions who have been lifted out of poverty because of capitalism would beg, I suspect, to disagree.
This lunacy is but the latest admission to the lexicon of self-hating diatribes against the West that the Left is so fond of generating through state education. Impressionable children will absorb this nonsense as if it’s the truth. And, as always, accompanying the socialist ideology is a tranche of anti-Semitism.
The new module curriculum wrongly parrots the Islamist trope that Israel is a colonialist state. The Boycott, Disinvest, Sanctions campaign, designed to destroy the Jewish state, is presented as a ‘social movement’. not as a political mission.
Though the prominent activist Angela Davis supports the destruction of Israel and totalitarian regimes, Californian educators have included her in their list of significant people for children to admire and emulate.
The apparatchiks who created this absurdity have asked for more time to consult experts. But, given their ‘expertise’, I expect that capitalism and West-bashing will only get worse in further drafts.
Instead of being taught history and maths, Californian children will be instructed to become activists if this goes ahead. This is not teaching, but brainwashing – something socialists are very good at. Unless Californians wise up, socialism will continue to wreck their state for many years.
Only the very wealthy can afford to be supportive of this type of woke education. They can send their children to school anywhere. They alone have the means to flee the devastation that their beloved socialist regimes invoke, as they do the wildfires.
The uber-progressive state is a living example of what will happen to Britain should Labour win the general election. If it comes to pass, you can expect breakdown in society where blackouts, crippling poverty and corruption are the norm.
