One of the most articulate, entertaining, and highly rebellious MPs of the 2010 intake, the privileged, unabashed archetypal Conservative Jacob Rees Mogg is a species Dave Cameron tried to wipe out.
A practicing Christian, Rees Mogg opposed gay marriage, stating “I’m a Roman Catholic and have made it clear to my constituents that in this sort of matter I take my whip from the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church rather than the Whip’s Office”.
Rees Mogg is a committed Eurosceptic who floated the idea of a Tory – Ukip pact, an idea that infuriated Tory modernisers.
He could never be accused of being a moderniser.
The Honourable Member for the 19th Century once said: “I accept that things like escalators do need an upgrade every now and then, but I think the fundamental principles of Conservatism have a long thread running through them that does not need to be modernised”.
The Conservative Woman couldn’t have put it any better.
