JUST what are we going to do with those wretched Christians in sport? They are deeply irritating and need to be put in their place, which is that they have no place, no place at all in sport, or indeed in civil life.
They should be hounded out of sporting life and all evidence of their previous success, all tributes to their sporting and athletic triumphs expunged from the record and shoved down the memory hole. Just where is Winston when you need him?
Take that witch, Margaret Court. I tell you a good burning at the stake is what she needs, and we haven’t had one of those for ages, not since that other witch J K Rowling started tweeting about women being women and all that nonsense.
Margaret Court was honoured at the Australian Open tennis championships a few days ago for the 50th anniversary of her Grand Slam win in 1970. Court was of course world No 1 and amassed more major titles than any other player in history. She is considered by some deluded people as one of the greatest tennis players of all time.
Court is also, however, a Christian minister in Perth, Western Australia. She has expressed ‘homophobic’ views in the past and opposed gay marriage so, like all who don’t conform to the latest views, she’s done. She’s so done in fact that we need a new word for done. Perhaps finished, or over, just about covers it. There are repeated calls to rename the Margaret Court Arena, because we all know iconoclasm is the way to go.
John McEnroe, well known for his decency on court, had it right: Court is the ‘crazy aunt’ of tennis. I think this has slightly misogynistic undertones but when you are closing in for the kill, best go all the way.
Then there is that other Christian who should be erased from memory: Israel Folau. Folau was sacked from Australia rugby for anti-gay social media tweets, and from his rugby union club, but he has now been recruited by the French Super League club Catalans Dragons.
In signing his rugby contract, Folau has agreed to keep his mouth shut and just play rugby. Folau said he ‘acknowledged the views expressed by Super League and the Rugby Football League’. However, he has failed to renounce completely his Christian views so let’s face it, he should be done/finished/over too.
Folau said: ‘I’m a proud Christian, my beliefs are personal, my intention is not to hurt anyone and I will not be making further public comment about them. I look forward to my return to the great game of rugby league with the Catalans Dragons.’
Nice try, Israel. But in our new liberal and tolerant society of ours this simply is not good enough. You need to be totally and utterly destroyed professionally for your Christian views, and some will not stop until you are not even a cautionary tale – you will simply become unknown, an unperson, if you will.
Keegan Hirst, the first British rugby league player to come out as gay, posted on Twitter that he is ‘shocked and disappointed’ by the deal.
‘Our great game is tasked with fighting against homophobia and standing up for the values it puts such high stock in. It shows none of the bravery, camaraderie or integrity RFL expects from its players, staff and fans,’ the Halifax prop said.
Preach it, brother. For some there should be no forgiveness or tolerance, there should simply be bloodlust and destruction. This is the only way we demonstrate how inclusive, diverse and tolerant we are – to ban for life a minority rugby player because of his Christianity.
I for one cannot wait to see where all this ends. The more Christians we can shame, destroy and generally exclude from sport and public life the better.
Once we have finished with this lot we can go on to those insufferable players who like to cross themselves on the field of play. That’s just the worst. Makes my stomach turn. I am sure we can make the argument that such a display makes people feel uncomfortable, it leaves people out etc, etc. Truly, this is just the beginning.
