Cressida and Amanda, a tale of two woke wimmin

I HOPE that readers will fondly remember Cressida Dick, as I do. Dame Cressida Rose Dick DBE QPM served as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police from 2017 to 2022. She is both the first female and first openly gay officer to have led the Met, which she joined in 1983.

When appointed as Commissioner, she reportedly said: ‘Diversity is at the heart of my role.’ In 2018, she launched a campaign to increase the proportion of female officers in the Met. At the time, 27 per cent were women; Ms Dick aimed to increase that figure to 50 per cent over time, although she did not set a target date. Later she was quoted as saying: ‘We’re growing, we’re bigger, more capable, more diverse, more scrutinised and better equipped than ever before. The streets are safer and I’m proud of that.’

Statistics told a different story. Crime increased every year that she was in charge, dropping only in 2020 when the lockdowns were imposed.

The year she launched her campaign to increase the number of female policepersons saw a 20 per cent increase in violent crime, 19 per cent increase in sex offences, 26 per cent increase in knife crime, 36 per cent increase in stalking and harassment, 11 per cent increase in theft and burglaries and a 64 per cent increase in grooming of children.

As is always the case in our useless public sector, 62-year-old Ms Dick got lots of gongs and stuff rewarding her failure.

From what I have read, she herself ticked a few important diversity boxes: female – tick; lesbian – tick; married to a woman – tick. If only she had been black or Asian, she’d have had a ‘diversity full house’. A cynic might be tempted to conclude that she was chosen to lead the Met more for her diversity credentials rather than for any proven ability to fight crime which increased inexorably under her watch. She was eventually pushed to resign (with a payoff of about £160,000 of our money plus a massive pension) after a series of blunders and scandals.

That brings us to Amanda Pritchard, chief executive of NHS England since August 1, 2021. When she was appointed she said: ‘I’m thrilled to have been appointed as the first woman leader of the NHS. For an NHS which is 75 per cent women, it’s a particular honour. But I would say that I think it is the diversity of the NHS that really makes it very special. So, really delighted to represent women, but very keen to make sure that the NHS continues to be somewhere that embraces diversity and inclusion at its core.’

An outside observer could be forgiven for thinking that 47-year-old Ms Pritchard is singing from the same woke songsheet as Cressida Dick.

Over the last couple of years, hospital trusts have been busily hiring large numbers of DIE (Diversity, Inclusion and Equality) managers at salaries of more than £50,000. Now we hear that Ms Pritchard’s woke, diverse NHS, which is supposedly ‘the envy of the world’, has proposed spending around £50million of our money creating three departments – Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, People and Culture, and People and Communities. There will reportedly be 244 roles recruited for these departments, despite Health Secretary Stephen Barclay writing to health bodies in March demanding diversity and inclusion be covered within ‘normal management processes’ rather than by specific teams.

Some people might worry that, if the NHS has a spare £50million, this might be better spent on medical staff to deal with the almost eight million on waiting lists.

But the greatest stupidity of the NHS’s obsession with diversity is that, in terms of the gender and ethnicity of its workforce, it is already more diverse than the UK population:

·         More than three-quarters of the workforce are female compared with about half of the UK’s population.

·         Of its 1.3million employees, 77.9 per cent are white compared with 85.6 per cent of the working-age population and 86 per cent of the total population; 10.7 per cent are Asian compared with 7.2 per cent of the working-age population and 7.5 per cent of the total population; and 6.5 per cent are black compared with only 3.4 per cent of the working-age population and 3.3 per cent of the total population.

·         Among consultants 59.9 per cent are white compared with 77.9 per cent of NHS employees. A huge 29.1 per cent are Asian compared with only 10.7 per cent of employees. And 2.9 per cent are black compared with 6.5 per cent of employees. So, Asians are over-represented at this level while blacks are under-represented.

·         The only under-represented group in our diverse, vibrant, profligate, underperforming, collapsing NHS seems to be white males.

Given the current levels of diversity in the NHS, it’s not immediately obvious why Amanda Pritchard feels it is a priority to hire 244 staff promoting even more diversity.

In conclusion, to cheer us all up in these grim times, here’s a video I produced a few years ago when Cressida Dick was running the Met into the ground. I worry that, in a few years, a similar film could commemorate Amanda Pritchard.
