Deliver us from Carrie

SOME eminent columnists gave their opinions and predictions about the Johnson government into the new year. Andrew Neil basically said that Johnson had made bad mistakes and is in deep trouble politically and electorally, but that he could survive and do well if only he would drop his lunatic zero carbon axiom inflicting penury on non-wealthy people. This seemed to be a common and sensible view. But Johnson is ignoring all such advice and pressing ahead with diktats penalising the drivers of ordinary cars, recklessly raising energy costs which people cannot afford, refusing to scrap VAT on energy (which was an electoral promise as a gain of Brexit) and keeping the increase in National Insurance.

Now we learn that there are to be more zero emissions areas designated to charge all petrol and diesel cars from next month, copying Mayor Khan’s £12 charge to drive into London unless in an electric car. Oxford, we hear, is doing the same, encouraged by the government, oppressing Joe Public in what I can only call fascist fashion. There seems to be nothing that we, the people, can do about this. Our opposition MPs are all in favour and support Johnson’s statist rule by decree backed by no electoral mandate at all, very much the reverse.

The figure at this heart of darkness seems to be our new Empress, Carrie Antoinette. The green lunacy virus was introduced into the head and loins of PM Johnson by this woman, and he is enforcing her whims with Napoleonic rigour, even to the madness of forcing the RAF to displace Afghan refugees from aircraft in favour of a pack of wild dogs. So no, Andrew Neil, you left Carrie’s control matrix out of your analysis and there is to be no backtracking, even moderation, of the green-eyed yellow idol of Downing Street. In the Times, Camilla Long rather crudely told us that the three women with great political power in the UK, Kate, Meghan and Carrie, had all ‘slept their way to the top’, and she lamented that was not good for the cause of women.

Yesterday we also heard that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is making plans to pay farmers not to farm but to allow vast areas to go fallow and become ‘wild’. Yes, Defra is inverting its mission to foster farming and food production and stop it at taxpayers’ expense. We all thought that Brexit was to bring a resurgence of home-produced food to mitigate our dependence on importing from European food we can easily produce ourselves. How foolish we were – the very opposite is government policy, stop home production and import more from the EU, but with a paltry amount also from non-EU countries under the Truss trade deals which in fact are very overblown. Basically Defra has always planned not to stem EU imports at all, and this Carrie-on-rewilding is a great pretext. It will of course be another of those ‘green crap’ costs heaped on, yup, the non-rich average family. We are coming ever closer to living in a state-controlled country akin to China. As Sarah Vine put it in her Tatler interview mention of Carrie: ‘Oh yes, she knows what she’s doing, she’s got an agenda. She’s very much of that generation.’

This rewilding cult has roots in the upper crust Tory chumocracy, as this Mail article shows. Carrie, Zac and Ben Goldsmith and Stanley Johnson are all high priests of this crazy threat to UK food security. Ever since we joined the EC and abandoned our self-sufficiency in food so that France could use us as a captive market, farming has been treated with disdain, notably by Defra which has fought tooth and nail on behalf of EU producers and fishermen against the interests of the UK industry and UK consumers.

A must-read article by the brilliant Ross Clark exposes all the hidden ‘green crap’ taxation and regulation we now labour under. The byzantine web of charges and taxes shows how much we are in the power of the green ideology. Clark has written a novel called The Denial  in which he shows that the UK is closing down manufacturing which uses non-green fuel and in so doing merely offshoring non-green production which we have to import! Boris, Carrie, Zac and Ben may feel better but are achieving nothing besides shutting down our industries. As Clark wrote in the Telegraph: ‘Needless to say, it is easy to force carbon-intensive industries from Britain by jacking up energy prices for industrial users. But to what purpose? It certainly isn’t helping the planet. Close a factory in Britain – where electricity comes mostly from gas, nuclear and renewables – and transfer production to China, where much electricity is still produced by far dirtier coal, and you have increased emissions.

‘What is so depressing is that no political party wants to stand up for UK industry any more. We have a Conservative party which chirps about levelling up communities in the Midlands and North-while driving away jobs by pushing up energy prices. Yet opposition parties want an even faster transition to Net Zero, at whatever cost to UK industry.’

Carry on Carrie: leading us to perdition. It seems this fanatical national masochism can be stopped only by mass protest of the ordinary voter – and possibly Farage, the one politician the Tories really do fear, rejoining the scrum.
