AN outrageous attack on press freedom by the EU has emerged over the war in Ukraine – with a British journalist being especially targeted.
It came after reporters covered the recent referendums staged in the Russian-controlled Donbass and Luhansk regions on whether the two should become part of Russia.
Remarkably, the EU is claiming that this ‘observation’ of the polls can be perceived as ‘recognition’ of the polls’ legitimacy and is ‘totally unacceptable’.
Now a French MEP, Nathalie Loiseau, has called on Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for foreign affairs and security policy, to impose sanctions against the reporters – pointedly naming British activist and blogger Vanessa Beeley.
Alarmed by this blatant call for censorship, I contacted Senor Borrell, a Spanish politician, to ask him to desist from any action against press freedom. In response, I received an extraordinary letter from Petra Gombalova, head of the EU’s ‘External Action Division Ukraine’. She wrote:
‘Thank you for your letter to High Representative Borrell. Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine represents a gross violation of international law and fundamental human values, and undermines European and global security and stability.
‘The European Union has been united in its response and has passed wide-ranging measures as a result of the invasion. The European Union strongly condemns these illegal “referenda” which go against the legal and democratically elected Ukrainian authorities, are in violation of Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and in blatant breach of international law. The results of such actions will be null and void and will not be recognised by the EU and its Member States.
‘Any support to illegal referenda – including their observation which can be perceived as their recognition – is totally unacceptable and runs contrary to these commitments.’
I do not want to unpack the gross omissions, and misrepresentations in that letter, because it would distract from the main issue here, which is suppression of independent reporting.
Vanessa Beeley has taken great personal risks to bring independent reports from Syria. She has been an associate editor of the alternative news outlet 21st Century Wire and is a regular contributor to the UK Column News.
As one would expect of someone who dares speak truth to the sacred cows of power, she has been denounced as a spreader of disinformation and conspiracy theories, receiving death threats.
Hers is one of a few brave voices giving us a window on what globalists are actually doing, ostensibly in our name (or in the name of Mother Earth, if you believe the propaganda). If we allow that window to be closed, history will not be kind to us, assuming that life as we know it has any future.
