From freedom figurehead to anti-Semitic anti-hero – the fall of Tucker Carlson

-

WE ALL have our heroes: people we admire and respect who have stood up publicly on issues we passionately believe in. But occasionally a hero will become the villain. His shining light turns to a shawl that darkens society. That has happened with Tucker Carlson.

On April 9, on his Carlson Uncensored X channel, he interviewed Rev Dr Munther Isaac, who pastors the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church in Bethlehem and the Lutheran Church in Beit Sahour, east of Bethlehem. He is described as being passionate about issues related to the Palestinian theology, also known as Palestinian Liberation Theology (PLT) or Christian Palestinianism, a heretical distortion and deliberate misinterpretation of biblical prophecy which has deceived many (so-called) Christians. It says that Jesus was a Palestinian and the first Christians were Arabs, and enables the designation of Israel as a colonialist power and a nation rejected and abandoned by God; many PLT advocates supported the bloodshed of the Intifada.

Carlson knows what he is doing. He will have done his research into Munther Isaac, gone over the articles he has published, his blog, the organisations he is associated with. He will know Isaac’s attitudes on issues of relevance to the purpose and aims of his interview. He will have set out a course for the interview, with enough background information to hand to stop the dialogue straying too far from that planned course.

So Carlson will know Isaac’s history of lies and libels against Israel, his being active with Kairos Palestine with its declarations that label Israel as an apartheid state committing genocide, and describing the formation of the modern state of Israel as the Nakba (disaster). He will know that Isaac is a leading light of the Christ at the Checkpoint conference that promotes a theology labelling God a liar and Paul a fraud, and the church as the replacement for Israel; Isaac is a man who does all he can to delegitimise Israel and destroy the generational connection of its Jewish citizens from the Jews of the biblical Jewish nation – a true ideological descendent of Luther, whose words helped shape Hitler’s genocidal hatred of the Jews.

With all those ingredients mixed into the pot, this should have been a highly contentious interview, with assertions and challenges back and forth between the highly controversial interviewee and deep-digging, truth-seeking interviewer. It didn’t happen.

Carlson gave Isaac 45 minutes of practically uninterrupted airtime to spew forth his Israel-hating, Christian Zionism-disparaging accusations, and biblically corrupt theology. Words and phrases such as genocide, starvation, collective punishment, brutal occupation, war crimes, were freely used against Israel with no challenge from Carlson. Isaac laid the blame for October 7 squarely at the feet of Israel and America’s support for the Jewish State; Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Iran, Hezbollah were never mentioned by Carlson or Isaac. Those with an anti-Semitic proclivity will have been cheering on from their armchairs, and the leaders of Hamas would have been smiling with deep satisfaction while watching from the comfort of their luxury accommodation in Qatar.

Watching the video, there is a clear impression of Carlson pursuing an agenda of demonisation of Israel and all those who support it, including Christian organisations that view Israel from a prophetic biblical perspective. He encourages Isaac’s lies that Israel targets Christians for punishment, and ‘Israelis that convert to Christianity have fewer rights’ in Israel than other citizens, and other anti-Israel calumnies. It appears that both he and Isaac view the Bible as something that needs re-appraisal and re-interpretation to suit their preferred world view of the Jews and Israel, a kind of Humanistic Christianity which says the Bible is not entirely true and you need to read our preference for what we think should be in it; i.e. to confirm a thinly veiled anti-Semitism that appears to be the theme of the interview. Who needs the anti-Israel propaganda of the BBC when you can watch Tucker Carlson giving succour to the world’s anti-Semites?

Of course, Tucker Carlson is not the only ‘fallen hero’ who has shown their true colours after October 7. I would name Bob Moran, Neil Oliver and Candace Owens as just three of many in the public domain who have been forced by the Hamas massacre to show where their sympathies lie in what now appears to be a largely anti-Semitic world.

Carlson’s interview; Moran’s cartoons with blood libel connotations and sexual innuendo against Israel-supporting Douglas Murray and Jordan Peterson; Oliver’s moral equivalence, use of the modern form of blood libel in his monologues, such as ‘It’s not manna that falls from heaven on to babies in Gaza but white phosphorus that burns them to dust’, and his Tucker-esque style of allowing guests to repeat proven lies and to smear Israel and its supporters wholly unchallenged; Owens’s support for anti-Semitic tropes and accusations of genocide against Israel – these are all a stark reminder that deep and evil prejudices affect even those we thought were on the right side of the light/darkness divide.

All these people know where anti-Semitism leads – to gas chambers and ovens, to October 7, to the baying mob and their grotesque chants that we hear every week on the streets of London and elsewhere calling for genocide. Why are they seemingly oblivious to the consequences of their words? What kind of demented evil is this?

We are in a time of much ‘shaking’, much sorting of the wheat from the chaff, and previous perceptions of people cannot be relied on to anticipate their attitudes on issues that will more and more arise very suddenly. Paul in his letter to the Ephesians said, ‘we should no longer be children tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting’ (Eph 4v14). We are in a time of great and accelerated change. So many issues, so many diverse stances, but only one truth, one moral course!
