I assume that all our readers, upon waking on Sunday morning, immediately read Peter Hitchens’s column in the Mail on Sunday. If you do not, shame on you, and please do so now – here.
Yesterday Hitchens again laid out the dangerous and foolish notion that is the identity card. First, they never do what they are intended to do, namely make life difficult for illegal immigrants or indeed terrorists. As Hitchens points out: ‘Terrorists, we may be sure, will have the very best and most convincing identity cards of all.’ He adds that an amnesty for illegal immigrants is almost inevitable.
So, we will be left with identity cards. Hitchens warns: ‘To accept identity cards would be to turn our whole free constitution upside down, and place the State above our heads rather than under our feet, where it belongs. If we do this, we will take a huge step back towards being serfs. And we will be spitting on the inheritance of liberty our parents handed on to us, and betraying our children and grandchildren. Don’t let these smooth voices fool you.’
Thank goodness for Peter Hitchens, one of the remaining few willing to speak truth to power.
