If migrants are vulnerable, so are we – to media gaslighting

-

MY parents stayed with us over Easter weekend (praise be), which was wonderful. The only downside was that they like to watch the news, namely the BBC. So, on Monday evening I was forced to have the 6pm bulletin on in the background.

By the time dinner was served, I was ‘raving like a madwoman’ and ‘losing my head’ because I had witnessed a blatant piece of propaganda.

I will not even start to explain what this propaganda was. It was on a niche subject further down the hour, but it was so outrageous, so outlandish, it reminded me once again why I never watch the news, how you become inoculated from the nonsense after a few months of not watching the news and therefore how, once exposed to the lies, it can send you over the edge.

Which brings me to the Government’s Rwanda refugee scheme. Now listen, I am not particularly invested in the Rwanda scheme, mainly because I don’t think it will happen and my days of defending Johnson or any of the snakes in this government are long gone.

However, I do know that the reason why all the Usual Suspects are going bananas about it is the same reason why the Usual Suspects went mad about Trump and The Wall. They go Full Hysterical because they know it will work. And they go Full Outrage because the ordinary folk want it.

Once the Usual Suspects get on the Outrage Train, this is followed by media gaslighting. This is where the media blatantly lie to your face and if you challenge them on it, they call you crazy.

For instance, the media tell you that those crossing the Channel in boats are all ‘vulnerable.’ These days there is an ever-growing list of groups of people who are ‘vulnerable,’ and if you dare take issue with that categorisation, you, dear reader, are the crazy one.

A quick non-biased Google search of ‘cross-Channel boats’ and images told me what I already knew. That up until the point these migrants get on to the small boats they are not, in normal use of the word, ‘vulnerable’.

They all look like strapping young men, who in a sane world would not be considered vulnerable. The women and children they have left behind are vulnerable, but not these young men who look like they would do well in the local rugby team. See for yourself.

But the media and the human rights lawyers and the rest of them will lie to your face and tell you that in fact these burly-looking men are vulnerable, weak, and in need of our protection. This is why you end up shouting at the news.

It is true that some women and children, including sometimes pregnant women, do take their chances with the people-smugglers and try to cross the Channel.

However, some reports were that only men will be sent to Rwanda, or at the very least the scheme applies to adults only. Therefore, no child will be included in this scheme, as they are truly vulnerable. Not the ‘22-year-old strapping young man’ sense of being vulnerable, but sane world vulnerable.

What I am trying to say is that the word vulnerable used to actually mean something. Traditionally, the most vulnerable group of people were women and children, and within that group the very weakest were widows and orphans.

If the women and children lost their male protector, then they were not only deprived of the means of survival, but they could also be subject to abuse: Widows and orphans were easy pickings for the bullies and the exploiters.

These days, the media and the Establishment will tell you that it is not the children who are vulnerable, but those men who abuse children and expose themselves to children because they now identify as women and need special treatment.

These days, if you don’t want men in the women’s locker room, the media tell you that you are the bully, for this poor man is now the vulnerable one, not the women and children who must put up with him and his male genitals swinging around in the showers.

These days, if you don’t want drag queens reading a book to your five-year-old kid, then you are the one ruining their childhoods, not those who seek to confuse and manipulate young children over gender issues.

Finally, these days if you believe that Great Britain should be permitted a border, then you are evil. Borders are for bullies, unless you are Putin invading the Ukrainian border, in which case borders become important again, but only for a select group of countries or if Covid hits; then they will shut the borders so fast you will not see your granny for two years.

It is this inversion of the truth and outright gaslighting by the media that enrages me the most. I don’t know how they get away with it.
