Our Conservative Woman platform was never more needed. A new, ignorant and unforgiving intolerance is sweeping the land making people afraid to say what they think for fear of social shaming and condemnation – or worse, loss of employment. Children are being subjected to increasing levels of indoctrination in school, from subversive ‘gender theory’ to so-called ‘anti-racism’. It is frightening.
Instead of confronting this dangerous, virtue-signalling bandwagon, the government appears to be boarding it. Yet its direction of travel is one way – towards an intolerant and authoritarian society.
One supporter, who described himself as neither politically active nor as holding trenchant views, wrote to me yesterday and put his finger on it:
‘ I feel it is important that a voice for freedom and the liberty of the person from oppressive politicisation from both main parties be maintained.’
That is us. At TCW we dare speak where others do not. We dare call out the new bigots and bigotry. We dare be irreverent – whether it be Woke Welby, the Covid science scaremongers (led by Gauleiter Hancock) or Loopy Lammy in our sight line. We dare stand up for those principles on which free democracy and healthy society depend. We dare take on those who would trash our past, rewrite history and cancel Britain’s extraordinary democratic, intellectual and sporting contribution to the world.
The speed of change, illustrated by the ferocity of the new iconoclasm and the divisive, neo-Marxist Black Lives Matter movement, gives our mission a new urgency. It is however but the latest act of a 40-year cultural war in which the values of marriage and family, freedom of expression, personal responsibility and duty – all foundational to Britain’s democracy, prosperity and safety – have been progressively undermined; in which Britain’s major institutions (the church, the judiciary and universities) have all fallen prey to increasingly extremist ideologies. Timidity, risk-aversion, authoritarianism and infantilisation, which have been creeping up on the entire Western world (though Britain seems to be leading the way), are the order of the day.
In March, with lockdown imminent, TCW co-editor Laura Perrins warned of our liberty being shackled and our future blighted. ‘RIP Europe, 312 – 2020’, she wrote, ‘we had a good run.’
We desperately hope that is not the case, but we are going to have to put up a fight.
The one ray of light is Brexit. Even now it is imperative that we hold the government’s feet to the fire to ensure that we really are freed from the progressive tyranny of the EU.
The Conservative Woman has created a unique platform for dissenting and independent conservative thought. Despite our dedicated voluntary effort, running the site and maintaining the professional standards needed to disseminate our message effectively does not come cost-free.
