AS much disdain as I have for Boris Johnson and the Tory Party inflicting this Cost of Lockdown Crisis upon us, the only people I hold with equal responsibility are the mainstream media outlets and the Labour Party, who demanded tougher, longer and harder lockdowns. Now they have the brass neck to try to make political hay out of this Economic Armageddon.
I have already called out the hypocrisy of ITV’s breakfast show Good Morning Britain, so I won’t repeat myself. But it seems Kay Burley and Sky News are following suit.
Lockdown-breaking Kay took herself off the Wigan Pier to find out all about the poverty – the poverty that was caused, in part, by media outlets such as Sky News fully whipping up the lockdown hysteria.
I don’t know if you remember Sky News, dear reader, but I do, and they were almost as bad as GMB for the ‘everyone is going to die, we must destroy the economy and lock down now’ propaganda.
Here is just one of its stories that promoted the idea that if only we had locked down earlier, fewer people would have died.
Sky News was without a doubt one of the main cheerleaders for lockdown, so it doesn’t get to complain now that the bill has fallen due.
In fact, I remember that if anyone opposed lockdown by pointing out the economic damage it would cause, we were called evil granny killers. ‘Eugenics’ may have been a term thrown around on Twitter for those who opposed lockdown.
For those of us who did not want to trash the economy, the term ‘lockdown hawks’ was coined, whereas for those who wanted to prolong the economic devastation by continuing the lockdown, why they were the ‘lockdown doves.’ Such nice, caring people, the doves.
We were told that the ‘economy didn’t matter’ when it comes to ‘saving lives.’ Now we know that the economy and people’s lives are one and the same.
The same people who said for years that austerity programmes literally killed people were the same people who demanded ever more stringent lockdown rules that intentionally shut down the economy, leading to tax rises and benefit cuts. So you don’t get to weep over benefit cuts now, cuts you always knew would ‘cost lives.’
To those who wanted earlier, harsher and longer lockdowns in spite of the fact it was anti-scientific and would ruin the economy, I say to you: No more talking for you. Just stop. You have caused enough damage. All you get to do now is apologise and leave the stage. To add insult to injury, the lockdowns didn’t even work.
Lockdown cheerleaders have surrendered the right to complain about the fact that lockdowns have consequences and they aren’t pretty. They do not get to complain about the Cost of Lockdown Crisis and Economic Armageddon that now is engulfing us.
The Tory Party should have stood firm and rejected a full lockdown outright. Now it will face the rest of the year being slaughtered on the cost of the lockdown crisis. There will be no end of MPs giving us more budget tips and cooking tips and tips on how to increase our income. They are going to lose the election on this.
