Kathy’s TCW review of the week

SOME weeks of editing TCW I get more irritated than others, and this was one of them. What triggered it? I love my readers’ emails keeping me abreast but sometimes it feels like fingernails on a blackboard. Several brought the Editor of UnHerd’s foray into the world of censorship to my attention: the world that we’ve been up against for the last four years. Freddie Sayers has just found out, apparently, that his site is subject (only partially, mind you) to ‘demonetisation cancellation’. In UnHerd‘s case, just some of his articles have been downgraded by an outfit called the Global Disinformation Index, which our government’s Counter Disinformation Cell has been busy working with and financing.

Well, welcome Freddie to the world of government, big tech and billionaire censorship that has been blocking, banning as well as totally demonetising TCW (and other dissident sites) from the start of lockdown and controlling MSM output. Why this has been a surprise to him I don’t really know, especially since his benefactor’s other operation, GB News, has been subjected to advertising cancellation from the start. Maybe in the case of UnHerd the very minor loss of revenue source was not noticed? Or he thought his ‘moderation’ was such as to avoid this? That is not how it works. They’ll come for you anyway.

More to the point, demonetisation is but one arm of the censorship state and not necessarily the most effective one since Google pre-Covid screwed the ad market for sellers and buyers alike, leaving only the biggest online businesses sustainable. Even the MSM has had to put up paywalls and demand subscriptions. That is the reality.

But for the great covid repression and the huge new source of government propaganda revenue it brought the MSM, they might have gone under. They didn’t; they accepted the Faustian pact of self-censorship.

Freddie also seemed shocked that the feminism of his feminist writers (on the subject of trans) had not protected them from this declassification. Welcome, this time, to the world of identity politics in which feminists, as victims, have taken quite a tumble.

If this all sounds a bit cantankerous, forgive me. Indeed we have to thank Freddie for adding one more piece to the jigsaw of global information control. He’s detailed it here. But I am sure you’ll understand my frustration at being told by one well-meaning friend that the Global Disinformation Index founders worked at Davos, ‘so it seems the conspiracy theorists were correct . . .’  and why I just wanted to scream. Anyone else still in any doubt about the WEF’s open conspiracy to undermine democracy and its ambition to install global corporate governance, please just read this.

What, I wondered, did this friend think I have been battling for years and especially the last four? My imagination? What did she think I have been committed to exposing but the global disinformation industry – governmental and otherwise? I found myself sending my last year’s post on ‘sleepwalking into censorship’ to all those who said similar things.

But what that one post didn’t cover was the several other articles on TCW that have reported on the network of the information controls designed to stop any ‘wrongspeak’ from getting out. Take the Trusted News Initiative for a start, the secretive cartel orchestrated by the BBC in 2020 with legacy news organisations and tech companies to collaborate in the suppression and censorship of information. ‘Core partners’ include AP, Agence-France Press, CBC/Radio-Canada, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the Financial Times, First Draft, Google/YouTube, The Hindu, The Nation Media Group, Meta, Microsoft, Reuters, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, Twitter and the Washington Post.

Together they decide the correct narrative for each story, whether covid or climate change, for press agencies to spread around the world’s media and technology giants to shut down, de-platform and ban anyone daring to question their version of events. And lets not forget the BBC’s Media Action which began a campaign to counter ‘disinformation’ on Covid-19 vaccines, saying the World Health Organization (WHO) was the only viable authority on this topic. But that’s nothing compared to the hundreds of millions Bill Gates has spent on bankrolling news outlets, making his foundation one of journalism’s main gatekeepers, including the BBC, the Guardian, the Financial Times, and even the Telegraph.

GF also funds a global network of young ‘journalists’, an International Centre of Journalists, with $20.4million to promote ‘public awareness’ around global health. If you want a job in journalism you had better comply. Robert Kennedy Jr is right. Gates’s press bribes have paid off: ‘During the pandemic, bought and brain-dead news outlets have treated Bill Gates as a public health expert despite his lack of medical training or regulatory experience.’

Gates also by the way funds an army of ‘independent fact checkers’ including the Poynter Institute and Gannett which, again Kennedy points out, use their platforms to silence detractors and to debunk as ‘false conspiracy theories’ and ‘misinformation’ charges that Gates has championed and invested in

When TCW began in 2014 David Cameron famously banned us from Central Office. We laughed and took it as a badge of honour.  It was perhaps a sign of what was to come. How we have been treated since the start of Lockdown is a warning of what every evidence based dissenting site now faces under the new Online Safety Act with its Ofcom regulator in addition to big tech banning and disinformation gatekeepers. Banned from promoting our blogs on Twitter; deplatformed by Google meaning no Google Ads or any other online ads for us as a source of revenue (you have to laugh, despite this ban they still email me weekly ‘Google Adsense Violation Notifications’ on our copy, as if to make sure I don’t forget Big Brother is still watching us) a ‘demonetisation’ which has made us, unlike UnHerd, entirely dependent on voluntary subs and donations.

We were also blocked by each and every mobile phone operator for some six months in 2021, the latter we believe at the direct behest of Whitehall. Youtube banned us too. My interview with Pat Cash and his concerns about vaccine unknowns and the pressure on young tennis player was simply removed from our Youtube Channel. See here.* All of this was because we questioned and challenged the official narrative. Though these combined ‘cancellations’ or efforts to reduce our visibility and reach did not close us down, they lost us something of the order of a quarter of a million page views a month at a point when were were expanding significantly. That’s the reality, not just a black mark on a couple of pieces of copy. Which is why I ask you now, once more, to do what you can to bring our website to everyone’s attention. With no marketing budget, we need you to spread the word.

I am sorry for this somewhat bad-tempered rant but I am happy to say that my mood did lift before the week came to its end. Yesterday morning, in the car, I heard what seemed almost unbelievable news from one of the two parts of the British Isles from which I thought reason had fled entirely. Ken Skates (Wales’s new transport minister with a most wonderfully appropriate name) had indeed got on his skates. He announced the end of the hated 20mph speed limit and, more importantly, admitted that even his own family had signed 500,000-strong petition against the scheme that precipitated the U turn. If the people can speak once, they can do it again. We can take heart.
