Ken MacIntosh: Trump’s border wall merely copies his southern neighbours

-

A couple of days ago I found myself chatting with a Latin American acquaintance about walls being built in North America to keep foreigners out. My acquaintance became disgruntled and spoke of the violence and hatefulness of the border guards who mistreat those they intercept. The guards often illegally detain and assault transients. She informed me that much of the fence had already been built.

My acquaintance is from El Salvador and the ‘mistreatment’ that she spoke of was that perpetrated by Mexican border guards against those attempting to enter Mexico from the south (whom my acquaintance referred to as “Central Americans” – as opposed to Mexican’s who are both “arrogant” and “North American”). Had Donald Trump overseen the beating of illegal immigrants, the world would be trembling in apoplectic rage. As it is, nothing. No protests outside the Mexican Embassy in London.

My acquaintance continued, “it’s not just Mexico”. Nicaragua, apparently, wants its own wall. The Nicaraguans have been violently repelling unwanted outsiders (Cubans mainly). Migrants have reported being attacked without warning by large numbers of Nicaraguan soldiers. The Red Cross has become involved. This 2015 news report stated that, “Nicaragua … has temporarily closed its land border with Costa Rica, maintaining a heavy presence of anti-riot police and heavily armed soldiers”. A human wall. Good old Nicaragua. The Sandinistas and all that. Sturdy socialists who stuck it to Reagan and are now sticking it to refugees/economic-migrants. There will never be a protest about border arrangements outside the Nicaraguan Embassy in London.

Venezuela has been getting in on the act too. President Nicolas Maduro decided to shut down the border with Colombia, stating that he wanted to prevent criminals, paramilitaries and smugglers from entering the country. Having spent much time in Venezuela myself, I know that Colombian immigrants are blamed for everything – crime, the economy, prostitution. They are Venezuela’s scapegoats. Unfortunately for Maduro he doesn’t have the money to build a garden wall, let alone a border wall, so he has had to make do with blocking bridges and putting up a few barricades. No British people are protesting outside the Venezuelan embassy.

Venezuela’s southern neighbour, Brazil, is, in turn, keen to keep out horrible Venezuelan’s (amongst others), and is planning to put into place a “10,000-mile virtual fence”. This will involve employing a mixture of satellites, electromagnetic signalling, tactical communications, drones and an increased army presence. As this website reports:

The sheer size of the terrain that will be covered makes this one of the most ambitious defence programs ever put in place in Brazil. Brazil is now picking supplies for the vast project, which is expected to take up to 10 years to finish, according to UPI. Dozens of companies are involved in getting the project up and running; it is expected to cost $13 billion.

Nobody is protesting outside the Brazilian Embassy.

And so it goes on, this carnival of brotherly love. Argentina is beefing up security along its border with Brazil, so as to keep out drugs, human trafficking, terrorist threats and, presumably, Brazilians. These are nations similar to each other in culture, language and religion.

Maybe one day we, as a species, will become one gigantic Benetton advert, but history tells us that we probably won’t. Most people want their borders protected. Most want their cultural unit to remain intact. And in most cases the western liberal-Left accepts this. But not when it comes to the USA, Europe or Israel. When Trump wins an election: outrage! When Israel builds a wall: outrage! When Hungary builds a fence during the migrant crisis: outrage! This is because for the liberal-Left, the West is not worth defending. It is a racist abomination that must atone for imperialism/slavery/arrogance, and it can only be improved by allowing the whole world’s population to come here, so that we might, eventually, cease to be ourselves.

Trump is not an aberration. In wanting to build a wall, he is attempting to do what leaders are doing all over the Americas (and the world). It’s just that he is doing it in the name of the USA, ‘the Great Satan’, and that really isn’t on.
