We knew it was coming, but in many ways I was still surprised when Hillary Clinton finally declared that she was seeking the Democratic nomination to run for President of the United States.
Part of me was hoping she would not do this to the American people again. A Clinton, in the White House. Surely, surely even a Democrat can see the horror within.
The Clintons are corrupt. We know this by the surname – Clinton. It is what they do and who they are. Hillary in particular has so many skeletons in her vast, vast closet that she must have had to hire out a hanger the size of airbus somewhere in Omaha just to stuff all those dodgy dealings away. The Clintons, however, are so corrupt they have developed an effective outer shell that means no matter how grave the wrongdoing, it never seems to stick. The American people just zone out, filter all the filth, perhaps because it is so overwhelming.
In fact this outer shell repels whatever you throw at it back onto the journalist/intern/political party/victim who points out the wrongdoing. It is an amazing substance; it needs a patent.
So the Clintons are willing to do this all again. Hysterically, they are going to run a campaign on the basis that Hillary is the future, the bright young thing, and her XX chromosomes. No doubt the daughter Chelsea will be used relentlessly and was first out of the block with an interview saying how it is important to have a woman running the White House, as she will strive for more consensus between the parties.
Sure, Hillary the bridge builder. See what they have done there – Hillary is the one with the outstretched arm and if the Republicans refuse it, it is because they are a bunch of misogynistic bullies. By outstretched arm the Clintons mean, the Republicans must act like Democrats and agree to all their proposals, otherwise they are just holding the American people to ransom.
But the weirdest thing about all of this is how the Clintons think it is acceptable, in a democratic republic that prides itself on equality and opportunity for all, that the Presidency should be held by the same family for (they hope) 16 years.
On Radio 4 they had a Clinton spin-doctor spinning straw into gold. It was a classic.He said Hillary could have chosen the easy life an ‘icon on the world stage’ (stop sniggering at the back) but instead she has chosen the difficult path of running for the presidency. Ah yes, she is doing us the favour, the sacrifice is all hers, this presidency lark. I had difficulty keeping down my cornflakes.
The Clintons, as well being the most corrupt pair this side of Russia, are all also the most power hungry. They make Cameron, Miliband and even Clegg look like a bunch of poodles.
I am pretty sure that even the Milibands know in the their hearts that only one of them could ever be Prime Minister. It is just not on to have two brothers as PM even if there are years in between. This is not Ancient Rome.
And if ever Hell freezes over and the sky darkens as the baby-eating dragons descend as Ed Balls or Yvette Cooper become Labour leader, they know, they know it must be one or the other. Because it is just plain nuts to have two from the same family running a democratic country. The Americans did it with the Bush family – and look how that turned out.
The Clintons are essentially David Cameron, the Milibands, Clegg and all the others in one single frightening husband and wife team. Their thirst for power is insatiable. It must be so strong that I do not think any mere mortal such as you or I could ever understand it. It is only by pondering this, really contemplating this mindset, that we can even begin to understand a Clinton and appreciate what horrors lie ahead for the American people. It is going to be brutal.
