Why do people think the survival of Western Europe is inevitable? It just baffles me. There they all are – tweeting away, thinking as we have survived this long, our security, prosperity and democracies are assured.
Perhaps, just perhaps, the Romans thought exactly the same thing. There they were chilling out in their Roman baths saying, our civilisation rocks, our army is on the march and those stinking barbarians will never get us. But they did get them. It was a slow collapse – but they got them in the end. There was nothing inevitable about the survival of the Roman Empire and it was eventually overrun and destroyed by 476 AD.
Today continental Europe has threats both inside and out. The Leftists constantly undermine it and have been waging an internal war against its capitalist economic system and its Judeo-Christian values for at least 40 years. Now mass immigration flings itself upon an enormous welfare state and the foundations start to crumble.
Italy, Spain and Greece stand on the verge of economic collapse – saved only by the German taxpayer. The Spanish youth unemployment rate hit 55 per cent in 2013. Fifty-five per cent. Their fertility rates are well below replacement level. If you have too much debt and not enough people to pay this debt, it is collapse, not survival that is inevitable.
And beyond Europe’s borders is Islamic State. Now, I am not saying these monsters have the military sophistication of the Germanic tribes that triumphed over Rome, but they are a threat and can infiltrate European borders with ease – because there are no real borders to speak of.
And yet, here we all are relying on the God of inevitability. We fought the Fascists and the Communists and won – we will fight of these Islamic scumbags and win again.
Sure, Europe did survive fascism but with two crucial caveats many like to forget. First, it took America finally to destroy the Nazi Germany and it cost nearly 500,000 lives to do it and secondly, it did not come quick enough for the Jews of Europe. So the European continent survived. But six million Jews did not.
Likewise Communism was only defeated by the Americans and the American right in particular. It was Thatcher and Reagan who finally brought them down. This was not inevitable either and certainly had nothing to do with the Left.
When Reagan denounced the USSR as an evil empire the Left in America exploded with indignation (sound familiar?). While Thatcher was standing firm against the evil of communism, the current leader of the Opposition was taking a tour behind the Iron curtain. Seeing the oppression of millions was his idea of a good time.
When US soldiers were about to land on the beaches of Normandy, do you really think they thought victory was inevitable? Nothing was inevitable about that victory. Nothing – but they fought on anyway.
Continental Europe is on the verge of collapse. I take no joy in saying that. Take the Eurostar to Gare du Nord. You can smell the decay.
Which leaves America – the great defender of Europe. Currently the Left has a stranglehold on all the main institutions: the media, the universities, the legal system and the public schools. The Left is intent not on perfecting the Union but instead on ‘fundamentally transforming’ America and bullying and slandering all those who stands in its way. A leftist America will not rescue the European continent again. It believes Europe – with its isms – is as barbaric as America. What would there to be save?
There is absolutely nothing inevitable about the survival of the West in its current form. Just ask the Romans.
