Many years from now the Left will look back at 2016 and 2017 as the golden years. It was a time when every day was an opportunity to display their virtue and to tell the world what a moral person they were for opposing Brexit and Trump especially. The truth is – they love Trump, he is their pantomime villain come to life.
This was confirmed to me by a well-known lefty who I will not name in the interests of fairness. Let’s just call him Jason. No, hang on that might be a bit too obvious. I will refer to him as Mr Cowley who may or may not be the editor of the New Statesman.
Anyway, one Sunday on a paper review I said to Mr Cowley, ‘you must love Trump as he generates so much material and boosts your circulation’. Yes, he confirmed, our circulation has indeed increased. The outrage industry is just that – an industry. Witness this not extremist cover at all from the New Statesman, with the Statue of Liberty adorned with a crown of thorns declaring that Donald Trump was launching nothing less than a ‘war on democracy.’
This is not to say that the lefties don’t believe all the crazy anti-Trump stuff they write. I am sure the great deluded believe every word. But the truth is they are secretly delighted about this Trump Presidency and indeed Brexit. It generates copy and income. That’s Trump for you – Making Lefty Journalism Great and Profitable Again.
This would all be fair enough if it were not for the second aspect of this golden era – how the Left like to sow the seeds of division and fear. We are now a ‘divided society’, I hear from Brendan Cox and others. Really? That is not what I recognise on my street or school gates.
The Left also likes to frighten its family, friends and neighbours that European workers will be thrown out on their ear post Brexit (even though this will not happen) and Trump is coming for everyone but the white male – the women, the blacks, the Muslims and the migrants. “[Trump] is unstable, vengeful, sexually predatory, misogynistic, racist, unscrupulous, notionally in charge of the world’s most powerful country and, possibly and incidentally, mentally ill.”
None of this is true – but the Left must continue with the race baiting and terrorising of the populace because this expands its client base. Once you convince enough people that they are in grave danger of something unimaginable happening then the Left offers itself and its grand statist solutions as protection.
It’s a Mafia protection racket – give us your power (and money in the form of taxes) and we will protect you from the big bad bullies of Brexit and Trump.
So expect to hear much more from this lot on your radio and TV screens – some lefty stirring up hostilities and splitting up communities on race and other identity lines. But there is no great phantom menace coming – only the lefty bullies who make stirring up hatred an art form and genuine career option.
