Shirley Manor Primary Academy, a state school in Bradford, has declared a prohibition on sausage rolls. Pork pies and pepperonis are also out. And sugar.
This is all part of the government’s campaign to encourage healthy eating. First the state came for the children, then it came for their lunch boxes.
A letter sent home to parents has declared that unhealthy foods – sugar, salt and saturated fats – ‘should not be included in a pupil’s packed lunch box’. Any such items ‘will be removed’ by the school. What’s more, the offending parents may be ‘consulted’ by a ‘family liaison officer’. Beware the school meals police knocking on your door. Resistance is futile.
What a sign of the times this really is: that eating a sausage roll has become a revolutionary act.
