The long march through the institutions has arrived in Hull, the UK City of Culture 2017 – not, sadly, a city of comedy any more.
A theatre version of the 1970s and 1980s TV sitcom Are You Being Served? has been banned for being sexist and failing to reflect the diversity and inclusivity of a modern Britain.
So the denizens of politically correct Hell, sorry Hull, will be deprived of such degenerate scenes as Mrs Slocombe complaining about problems with her pussy, and fellow staff members at the Grace Brothers department store solicitously offering to stroke it for her.
Perhaps the proprietors of the Truck Theatre would prefer something along these lines . . .
The scene: Grace Siblings, purveyors of non-gender-specific garments to non-Conservative voters and Daily Mail haters.
Ms Slocombe, recently demoted head of transwear, asks: ‘Has anyone seen my big fluffy pussy?’
Mr Humphries, senior fitter in the brassiere department: ‘No, there are no cats allowed in here.’
Ms Slocombe: ‘Oh, OK then. Tell you what, I’m not keen on that Brexit lark. But I do like that young Jeremy Corbyn chap.’
