Last September we somewhat facetiously reported on the ‘TERF’ war at Speakers’ Corner as the latest manifestation of the gender wars – between radical feminists and transgender activists. A transgender activist was accused of assaulting a radical feminist who’d insisted, absolutely rightly, that men (whatever they do to or have done to themselves) can’t become female.
This clash of the titans – the transwomen’s rights demo and counter-demo by the Trans-Exclusionary Radical Femnists (TERFs) struck us as pretty ridiculous. Who makes up these names, for heaven’s sake, and who takes themselves so seriously?
Well it’s not quite so funny now, as we are the first to admit. Radical feminist activism may not be the most persuasive way to draw attention to the dangerously misguided and irrational transgender demands that we have written about on numerous occasions on this site.
But the TERFs certainly have a point about speaking the truth which is in danger and that’s a view we share – as last week’s hearing on the September brawl has just underlined.
Maria MacLachlan, 61, was giving evidence against the transgender activist, Tara Wolf, who was accused of knocking her down, when District Judge Kenneth Grant revealed which side of the politically correct fence he was on.
Warning Ms MacLachlan to refer to 26-year-old Miss Wolf as ‘she’, he said: ‘The defendant wishes to be referred to as a woman, so perhaps you could refer to her as “she” for the purpose of the proceedings.’
To which Ms MacLachan replied: ‘I’m used to thinking of this person who is male as male.’ She continued to refer to Ms Wolf as ‘he’ and ‘him’.
All power to her elbow, say we. As for the judge, he should hang his head in shame.
PS: Miss Wolf was found guilty of assault and fined £150.
