During the recent snowfalls University College London tweeted: ‘Dreaming of a white campus? Our campuses will be open and operating fully today so please make your way in as planned. (We can’t guarantee snow but we’ll try!)’
They swiftly apologised, however, after a Twitter user complained: ‘You know who else dreamt of a white campus? Hitler, that’s who. Disgusting.’
Pointing out that the tweet was a reference to Bing Crosby’s 1942 hit White Christmas, UCL grovelled: ‘We chose our words very poorly yesterday . . . We’re sorry and we’ll choose our words more carefully in the future.’
One is tempted to say that this represents a black day for free speech. On second thoughts . . .
