If you’re planning to attend Euro 2016, your biggest concern is probably getting attacked by the murderous fanatics of the Islamic State.

But perhaps the jihadis can be forgiven: after all the BBC has suggested on its iWonder website that England fans who dress as crusaders risk offending Muslims.

The history and motivations behind the Crusades are complex. The BBC, however, opts for a simpler ’truth’, characterising all crusaders as ‘perpetrators of violent attacks’ on other religious communities.

Once again, the Beeb offers us a cartoon version of history.
