In just over 10 days, Diane Abbott could be Home Secretary, and she was on the telly over the weekend giving us a taster of what could be to come.
When quizzed about her pro-IRA views in the mid-1980s, she quipped that this particular instance “was 34 years ago, I had a rather splendid afro at the time. I don’t have the same hairstyle and I don’t have the same views.” Well that’s alright then.
She continued, saying that – rather like her hairstyle – she has “moved on” and so questions about her views are no longer relevant. Victims of IRA terror cannot, however, simply “move on”.
Party leader and former lover Jeremy Corbyn said that “Diane’s hairstyle is a matter for Diane”. Given her flippancy about terrorism, it is a matter for all of us.
