The birds of Awliscombe in Devon will have an easier time feasting on crops after an intervention by unlikely ally: political correctness.

Local farmers have made a habit of producing scarecrows in the likeness of celebrities (Winston Churchill being one).

One of them, designed as a tribute to the late Muhammad Ali, has been dismantled after lefty villagers complained that it looked too much like a golliwog.

It’s fortunate that the landowners will be able to find plenty of inspiration in the ranks of the political left, should they want a properly frightful replacement.
