Former Archbishop of Canterbury and eyebrow enthusiast Rowan Williams has crowed that “the politics of mass democracy has failed”.
Writing in that well-known Church circular, the New Statesman, it seems that this has been brought on by the Brexit vote and the election of Donald Trump. Suddenly, it seems, democracy is terrible just because Hillary is not President-elect and we are not going to be under the continuing yoke of Jean-Claude Juncker.
Instead, Williams seems to want “local civic activism” to replace this flawed democracy lark.
Rather than a replacement for democracy, it sounds an awful lot like sour grapes to us.
