Instead of chastising smart-Alec students on University Challenge, now it’s Jeremy Paxman’s turn to be silenced by his own superiors.
A Radio Times article promoting his forthcoming documentary Paxman in Brussels was scrapped after BBC suits fretted that it exhibited an anti-EU bias.
Rumour has it that Paxman’s article maintained neutrality, as Lord Reith would have wanted. However, his editors took issue with the piece’s alleged hostility towards supranational bureaucracy. Paxman preferred not to submit the article rather than cave in to his censors’ demands.
Paxman had put them in a difficult situation: how could the BBC reconcile these heretical opinions with the millions the EU pays them to be a Remainian mouthpiece?
