A plan for gender neutral school uniform will mean that boys will be allowed to wear skirts at a private school in North London.
Highgate School, which charges £6,790 per term, would also allow boys under 16 to wear earrings for the first time.
Headteacher Adam Pettitt maintains that “greater numbers of pupils are questioning gender identity than in the past” and that even in the days when schools weren’t feeling compelled to offer skirts to their male pupils, “it seems inconceivable that these sorts of questions simply didn’t exist”.
Public school pupils have always been considered a bit wet by their state school counterparts. Quite how boys in skirts will be treated by the roughs at the local comp remains to be seen.
