May’s dangerous deal and a warning the media has ignored

On Friday night the former head of MI6 Sir Richard Dearlove and Falklands hero Major-General Julian Thompson released the text of a detailed and informed letter they have written to MPs urging them to vote against Mrs May’s so-called Brexit ‘deal’. They warn in uncompromising terms: ‘The first duty of the state, above trade, is the security of its citizens. The Withdrawal Agreement abrogates this fundamental contract and would place control of aspects of our national security in foreign hands. Vote against this bad agreement.’

This is a follow-up to an earlier letter which was also signed by former Chancellor of the Exchequer Lord Lawson, hotel tycoon Sir Rocco Forte, former Ulster Unionist leader Lord Trimble, Martin Howe QC from Lawyers for Britain, and powerful investor Sir Paul Marshall. This was instantly dismissed by No 10.

One might expect that a renewed warning from such senior figures would receive coverage from the mainstream media but it has been ignored.

This is no surprise with respect to the BBC. We know that unless it’s Sir John Major, Tony Blair or some other former dignitary whose Brexit views tally with the BBC’s own we don’t expect them to pay any attention – not even to a former Governor of the Bank of England. So why would the inconvenient views of a former head of the security services about the threat to national security that May’s deal poses be any different? Especially when they are so busy promoting the Norway option.

But we expect better of the press. If they still call themselves newspapers the Times, the Guardian, the Daily Mail, the Daily Express and the Telegraph should be ashamed of themselves for failing to report this significant warning.
