BBC ignores vaccine passport protest march

THOUSANDS gathered in London yesterday to protest against lockdown and, more specifically, the idea of vaccine passports.

As expected, there has been a lot of contention about the number of people in attendance at the march. Most news reports put the figure at around 10,000, but London mayoral candidate Laurence Fox says there were at least 50,000. Others have claimed there were many more than that.

Regardless of the true figure, if your only source of news yesterday had been the BBC, you would have thought that no march had taken place at all. The corporation’s ‘news’ website was quite capable of publishing a story on ‘how Black Lives Matter protesters feel now’ on its homepage (in a section titled ‘Must See’), but was clearly too pushed for time to cover the groundswell of opposition to lockdown in the nation’s capital.

Thank goodness its ‘disinformation reporter’ was on hand to tweet the following: ‘A few thousand anti-lockdown protesters marching through London. Ostensibly they’ve been billed by organisers as a freedom march against vaccine “passports”. But on Telegram and Facebook where protesters organised – crowds are heavily into fringe beliefs and online conspiracies.’ Balanced as always! This ‘reporter’ would do well to remember that it was David Cameron who famously refused to apologise for describing the UK Independence Party as ‘fruitcakes’, ‘loonies’ and ‘closet racists’ for their Brexit views and who proceeded to lose the Referendum to 17.4million people who voted against him and for British independence.

Even where the march was covered, reports focused on ‘protesters spouting disproven conspiracy theories’ (Sky News) and the idea that ‘many [lockdown restrictions have been] lifted earlier this month’ anyway (Evening Standard).

MailOnline rather amusingly noted that ‘the crowds did not appear to be adhering to social distancing guidelines and were not wearing face masks’. Wasn’t that kind of the point?

No matter how much the BBC – and the Government for that matter – attempts to ignore it, the simple fact is that a great many people are sick to the back teeth with the ongoing lockdown restrictions, and the narrative surrounding ‘social’ distancing, vaccine passports and the like – the ‘new normal’, in sum. Perhaps we will just have to continue ‘uniting for freedom’ until the powers that be have no choice but to listen.
