This week’s music comes from the BBC 2016 Young Musician of the Year, 19-year-old cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason. He played Bach’s Cello Suite No 1 in G Major on none other than the Andrew Marr Show on February 25 this year. Liam Fox was lucky enough to be with Marr in the studio to witness this performance.
You may remember Kanneh-Mason, probably the most talented young musician in Britain today, from the royal wedding earlier this year. He grew up in Nottingham, the third of seven children. He began playing the cello at the age of six, having briefly learned the violin. At nine, he passed the Grade 8 cello examination with the highest marks in the UK. At nine!
In fact the entire family has an incredible musical talent. Here is the clan playing in 2017.
Note the age range. And this is Jeneba Kanneh-Mason’s performance in the keyboard finals of the 2018 BBC Young Musician of the Year
The family that plays together, amazes together.
