My classical music choice: Swan Lake

This Sunday my choice is the finale of Swan Lake. This version

is a favourite with the kids in my house because the ‘baddie’ looks extra bad. It’s by the American Ballet Theater with Gillian Murphy and Angel Corella. The Sorcerer is played by Isaac Stappas.

Swan Lake is a ballet composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875-76. It was a failure at first, but it is now one of the most popular of all ballets. I have seen Swan Lake three times, once as a child and twice in recent years, the last only a few weeks ago with my two eldest children at the Royal Opera House.

My six-year-old son informed me that he didn’t like it – he loved it! My elder daughter has requested better seats for the next occasion.

I find Tchaikovsky’s soaring violins particularly inspiring. Romantic and brave, the ballet and music of Swan Lake are a demonstration of artistic and cultural brilliance.
