NHS diversity chiefs required – no waiting lists here!

-

WHILE thousands die before receiving the medical treatment they need and with the number of patients on hospital waiting lists at 7.7million, or about around one in seven of the population, it is reported that NHS England has drawn up plans for three new departments called ‘Equality, Diversity and Inclusion’, ‘People and Culture’ and ‘People and Communities’, with 244 posts across the teams.

In December 2022 the Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust pre-empted this latest outbreak of waste and stupidity by advertising for a ‘Director for Lived Experience’, offering a salary of £110,000 to £115,000

The job advert read as follows:

‘We are seeking an interpersonally talented and strategic bridge-builder to join our Trust board in the exciting new post of Director for Lived Experience. The post holder will be responsible for establishing and maintaining the highest levels of Lived Experience Practice and amplifying the voice of those using services within decision-making at all levels of the organisation.

‘This post will become Trust Recovery Lead, building on nearly a decade of co-produced led development of recovery focused work across our local healthcare system, which has involved the recruitment and development of explicit lived experience roles within the workforce (including leadership positions); co-production developments/consultation, and our well established, peer-led Wellbeing and Recovery College.

‘Much learning has taken place during this time, and we currently find ourselves at a new juncture with decisions needed around the next chapter and the sustainability of this work. The Trust is seeking to structurally embed this work within all that we do, and hence is committing to this Board level Directorship. The aim is for this post to provide leadership for lived experience practice; bring the experiential lens to Trust Board decision-making, and facilitate the cultural changes needed to infuse and propagate best practice around shared decision-making, so it can become evident at every level, from Board to the ward and therapy/treatment room.’

Beyond parody.

The advertisement went on to say: ‘Demonstrating our strong commitment to EDI and in context of our objective aligned to the growth of diversity across the workforce; we are particularly seeking applications from individuals who may be from under-represented groups, such as black, Asian or other ethnic groups, individuals with a disability, or LGBTQ+ who meet the specific criteria.’

Translation: if you are white and not an ‘alphabet person’, do not bother to apply.

The chief executive of NHS England, the person ultimately responsible for the train wreck that is NHS bureaucracy, is Amanda Pritchard. Following an Oxford degree in modern history, she joined the NHS as a graduate trainee.

She has been with the NHS since then apart from a short period working for the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit invented by Tony Blair. In June 2019, she was appointed chief executive of NHS Improvement (that worked well) and was promoted to her current role in August 2021.

In November 2021, Pritchard ramped up the Covid fear campaign by incorrectly claiming that Covid hospitalisations were ‘14 times higher’ than the previous year that the winter of 2021-22 was going to be ‘difficult’ and, consequently, everyone should get jabbed.

Remember, ‘Our NHS’ is ‘the envy of the world’.
