The choice of a woman to play the role of Dr Who has been made to great fanfare.
It is seen as some kind of great victory for ‘equality’ by the liberati.
However, this fanfare is rather premature.
Television shows should not concerned with the identity of the performers or their gender, but if they are actually any good.
So, by all means celebrate another blow for the sisterhood. But Jodie Whittaker should be able to deliver performances at the very least on a par with her predecessors with no regard to her gender. That is the true test. It would be a predictable tragedy if this new incarnation is subject to praise on the basis of identity before actual delivery. If this were to be the case, it would only be a mirror to the way we increasingly live now.
If she fails to perform on screen as the latest incarnation of the itinerant Gallifreyan, this would indicate once again that ‘equality’ actually means paying the same for less value.
