We British tend to think nothing really nasty could ever happen here because that would just not be ‘British’.
Think again.
Human nature, including its nasty side, is ubiquitous throughout the world. We have plenty of latent Stasi, Gestapo, KGB, Stalins and Hitlers here who would readily be equally evil, or even more evil, than their historic counterparts. British people have sleep-walked into dangerous complacency. It’s easy not to value freedom when you’ve never had to fight for it. On this day of all, we need to remember that liberty can come at a terrible price. My fear is that many British people have simply stopped caring about liberty at all.
