WE have raised the question more than once in these pages of how is it that the Remain camp are so consistently let off the hook about the state of the EU – the EU that they would keep Britain shackled to; why is this never part of the Brexit debate; why are avid Remainers never interrogated on the failing project they are so eager to promote, and why is there no Project Fear when it comes to the economic and political perils for the UK of remaining within its suffocating embrace?
Apart from the Telegraph (where Ambrose Evans-Pritchard does his noble best to keep us abreast of the EU’s failing economy) and the Express, the EU is typically presented, and represented, through a Remainer media’s rose-tinted and incurious lens, and as beyond criticism.
Now a publication by Global Britain exposes this myth that the EU has ever been the primary enabler of UK prosperity or ‘a shining liberal beacon of co-operation against the dark adversarial and illiberal “winner takes all” UK’, an analysis which the author explains is little short of delusional.
Certainly, £82bn reasons the EU held back the UK – How the EU is a drag on UK prosperity is not the catchiest of headlines, but don’t be put off. You can whizz through Esther McVey’s wordy foreword, too, and crack into the executive summary, to find out how the EU, to come back to the title of the report, has cost the UK £82billion in lost economic opportunity and why the underperformance of the eurozone can be laid firmly – you have it – nowhere else but at the EU’s own door.
