That was an intriguing documentary and a salutary warning to any other state or country considering the legalisation of cannabis. It’s not just the risks to individuals but the risk to the wider community. The Colorado experiment has overturned almost every blandishment issued by the pro-legalisation lobby. All forms of addiction (including opiates) up, motoring accidents up, crime up, environmental damage from pesticides up, workplace absenteeism up, homelessness up, drug cartels buying up large swathes of the real estate to set up plantations for export to other states and countries, and so on. As always, the problem is short-sightedness because the lobbyists can’t see, or don’t want to see, the wider consequences which go far beyond the personal effects of the drug.
