Normative English exists to allow us all – Scousers, Glaswegians, Cockneys, Geordies et al – to understand each other. All of us effectively speak two languages, normative English and our regional dialect with its separate vocabulary.
Dr Cushing would never have become an academic if he hadn’t been educated in normative English. It’s strange that he wants to deny working-class children the same life opportunities that he had.
Stranger still that he wants to do it while the rest of the educational establishment is trying to get more ‘disadvantaged’ children into universities.
Like so many on the Left, Cushing’s ideas for improving the lives of working people and their children turn out to be destructive. Funny, that.
I’d bet Cushing would rather be struck dumb than say ‘I done it like, did’n I’ in front of his own peers.
