I think there was also a more basic (but strongly linked) reason. A distrust of the urban, politicaland media elites that has turned to dislike. A need to punish then and make them take notice. A deep resentment of having all one concerns ignored. Yes this is linked to immigration but it is also a lot more. This strength of feeling is so strong that it overrode economic concerns. The people were prepared to suffer financially to get themselves heard.
I believe the establishment are more shaken by this than they let on.
Brexit was the healthiest thing that has happened to our country in decades.
