In response to Laura Perrins: You back gay marriage? Polygamy is fine then, Mark Ellse wrote:
You are absolutely correct. There will be no end to the destructive arguments that the gay marriage legislation has initiated for, as you rightly say, one aim of its supporters is the destruction of marriage.
Many are well meaning but misguided. They caricature what they see as issues of ‘tyranny’ and ‘ownership’, forgetting the freedoms of security, companionship and protection that marriage and the rearing of one’s own biological children bring.
Sadly, David Cameron has polarised opinion. To be a ‘true Conservative’ one has, like him, to believe in gay marriage. The legislation, whatever his promises, requires most of us to kowtow to his views. Though I may be able, for the moment, to tell my own children that gay lifestyles are not my first preference for them, I doubt if a teacher would get away with repeating Evan Davis’s comment that “The gay community has less discipline because it doesn’t have kids to go home to”.
A particular view of equality has become the state religion and we must all be believers.
