What price accountability? That really is the question! I have a horrible feeling that May is accountable to somebody – but I’m not clever enough, or well enough informed, to know to whom she renders account.
Unfortunately (and this is the nature of crisis we face) whoever May is accountable to, it is not to the British People.
She has a resounding democratic mandate that she is ignoring with studied disdain – the disdain of the political class, who regard us as uneducated, unsophisticated drones to be sidelined and disempowered whenever possible.
In a very real sense our political class are rapidly setting about the abolition of universal suffrage. We can vote for whatever we like, but the only available outcomes (that the government is prepared to enact) will be dictated to us by the fashionable elites and their spin-doctors.
So we can cry out ‘Brexit please’ and they will reply: ‘Sorry – not a valid choice! We are more sophisticated than you, and we know Brexit is not in your best interests . . . ‘
If we have the temerity to object then we are labelled ‘crude populists’ – possibly suffering from ‘dangerous nationalism’ and lots of other ‘something-phobias’.
So we have a crisis in our democracy – how we deal with it will define our future as a (genuinely) free and democratic country.
