Reader’s Comment: English patriotism is panned

In response to Lefty Lunacy: Criticising the SNP is ‘racist’, Coniston wrote:

In one respect I do envy the Scots. Some 20 years ago, on the north west coast of Scotland, I took a trip on a small boat to a nearby island. The young Scots boatman had a shirt on, on which was emblazoned ‘Proud to be Scottish’.

Good for him, I thought, as I realised that this would not happen in England (about the English), and if it did, the perpetrator would probably be arrested on a charge of racism. The English are perhaps the sole nation on earth that must not be named.
