Reader’s comment: I’m British no longer

-

In response to Melanie Platt: BBC’s Englishness survey and the results it couldn’t stomach, JonBW wrote:

I considered myself British until the late 1990s; I now regard myself as English.

This has nothing to do with multi-culturalism or the ethnic make-up of this country: it is purely the result of the rise of Scottish and Welsh nationalism and Devolution.

The Union ceased to be constitutionally viable when Devolution was introduced: I don’t feel any allegiance to the UK. I like the Scots, Irish and Welsh and want good neighbourly relations with them. However it’s time for an independent England and an end to the constitutional unity of what should be four separate states.
