Rev Gomes is a truly brilliant man and I always love his insightful articles.
I am in the process of reading the Bible from cover to cover, and I also have a copy of the Koran which I plan to read next. As Rev Gomes states, there is quite a bit of violence in the Bible, especially the Old Testament. It is a bit unsettling when you read through it, and it reminds me of the Iliad, with the seemingly never-ending descriptions of battles and men getting slaughtered. However, the Bible recounts battles that have happened in the past, but does not exhort its readers to commit violence (OT violence is “descriptive, but not normative”).
Although I have not read the Koran in its entirety yet, I have read quite a few passages and it clearly tells its followers to do something about the rest of us – make us submit, convert, or die.
