Since self-appointed leaders of feminism can co-opt the sharia-supporting bigot Linda Sarsour to their numbers, nothing greatly surprises me about their hypocrisy. They were more than happy to try to get Hillary Clinton elected Hypocrite-in-Chief, disregarding the way she abetted her husband’s crimes while pretending to champion downtrodden women.
The new buzzword in the Leftists’ ever more bizarre lexicon is ‘intersectionality’, according to which doctrine one acquires ever more secular sainthood according to the number of social justice interest groups one belongs to. Sarsour is a woman and a Muslim, so that’s two boxes ticked, but she is also ‘black’. Not really black, of course, or even vaguely brown; she’s about as white as you can get. When she put on a hijab, however, she became ‘black’ and that’s what matters.
You’d think Ayaan Hirsi Ali could trump Sarsour in the feminist games. After all, she is a woman, formerly a Muslim (not by choice), a victim of both FGM and forced marriage, and she is genuinely black. Well, for one thing, she doesn’t play the intersectionality game, but she’d lose, anyway. In today’s feminism, a woman who embraces sharia is a victim, but one who risks her life to reject it is not. Because of Hirsi Ali’s views, her dark skin is discounted, too. Besides, feminists have no trouble ignoring trivia like honour murder, FGM and the other ways in which Islam oppresses women. Linda Sarsour made vile comments about Ayaan Hirsi Ali, widely publicised, and nobody on the Left objected.
In Leftist eyes, being on the ‘wrong’ side of the argument automatically dehumanises a person. Jill Craigie, the even more bonkers wife of the lunatic Michael Foot, claimed it was all right for feminists to disparage Margaret Thatcher, because, thanks to her policies, Mrs Thatcher wasn’t really a woman. American journalist and writer Michelle Malkin is of Philippine descent: female and effnikk, two boxes ticked, you’d suppose. Ermm, no. She is Christian and Right-wing, so it’s OK to make fun of her Asian features and diminutive stature.
As we saw after the Texas massacre recently, significant elements on the Left find it easy to demonise those they see as their enemies. The victims in Sutherland Springs were unworthy of sympathy, apparently. They were white; they were in a church; they were ‘probably’ NRA members (even the children); they’d all voted Trump (yes, even the children). The Left’s attitude to the sexual sins of its heroes follows the same pattern: blame the victim.
